TMEC – Marking 20 Years Since the Beaconsfield Mine Tragedy

As we mark twenty years since the Beaconsfield mine tragedy, Tasmania’s mining community pauses to honour the three people at the heart of that event. We remember Larry Knight, whose life was tragically lost, and we acknowledge the extraordinary resilience of Todd Russell and Brant Webb, whose survival and rescue captured the attention and compassion of the entire nation.

This anniversary is a moment of reflection, on the courage shown, the community that rallied, and the lessons that have shaped our industry ever since. The legacy of Beaconsfield continues to remind us that every worker deserves to return home safely, every single day.

We also recognise the extraordinary skills demonstrated by the rescuers during that critical time, whose expertise and dedication saved lives against immense odds. This expertise is not static; it is continually refined and strengthened through the Tasmanian Minerals, Manufacturing and Energy Council’s (TMEC) Emergency Response competition, held annually and regular training programs on mining and industrial sites. In regional areas, the SES response can and has been bolstered by mine site personnel, thereby providing support across the community.

Over the past two decades, resources companies, workers and regulators have strengthened safety culture, improved systems, and embraced new technologies. But our commitment to safety is never finished. Continuous improvement is our shared responsibility, and the most meaningful way we can honour those affected by Beaconsfield is by striving for safer workplaces across our industry.

Today, we remember. We pay our respects. And we reaffirm our dedication to a safer future for all who work in Tasmania’s mineral industries.

TMEC was pleased to host this industry roundtable and connect Richard Colbeck and Opposition Deputy Leader Senator Jane Hume with local business leaders. Open, practical conversations like this are essential to tacking shared challenges and strengthening Tasmania's industrial future.

Thank you to all who took part.

Today I convened an industry roundtable with business leaders from around the north west coast to discuss productivity with Deputy Leader, Senator Jane Hume

We discussed freight and transport, AI in planning, skills, agriculture, housing and the building industry, workplace culture, manufacturing and mining, and sovereign capability in a wide-ranging discussion on how we can improve the economy.

It was informative and thought provoking. Thank you to all who participated and to Jane for your insights into this matter.
