My oldest daughter is celebrating nine years of marriage. I made her this dress to go for a celebration lunch to a Mexican restaurant with her husband.

I grew up in an small town back in Mexico where my mum was a seamstress. Sometimes she become very busy, especially during public holidays. It was on one of those days that a girl came asking her to get a skirt made, however my mum’s schedule was full so she could not do anything for the young customer. I overheard the conversation and saw the disappointing reaction on the girl’s face so I said "I can do it". I was 14 years old and had no sewing experience but I was very brave and daring as some young people are. It was the late sixties, she wanted a miniskirt with a pair of lined complicated suspenders which I did, but at the time I did not know how I could. Over the following years I learnt to become a reporter, a journalist, a book proofreader amongst other related jobs. All the while still perfecting the art of sewing. So once I settled into my new life in Australia, I returned to my teenage hobby which has now become another profession I am proud to practice.

It was my youngest daughter’s birthday yesterday and we spent the late afternoon looking through photo albums. There were lots of baby photos, younger self ones too, of the time were me and my daughters were newly arrived and also found this one.
This one was one of my first jobs circa 2002. They were seven cousins all graduating high school on the same year. My husband had bought me a second hand sewing machine with which I was able to start my little business and the client required 3 dresses and 4 collar shirts made from scratch all in the same vibrant collar. Once the job was completed I was able to purchase my very first Janome machine. This became my favourite brand.
