Hi everyone,

I wanted to take a moment to give a big shout out to two incredible people doing amazing work for our native wildlife Terri and Beck from West Gippsland Wildlife Shelter.

I first met Terri and Beck almost a decade ago when I began my journey with Reptiles Victoria as a volunteer and committee member.

Since then, we’ve stayed connected not just as colleagues, but as good friends, running training courses, workshops, and heading out on reptile research field trips together.

Their dedication to wildlife rescue and rehabilitation is something truly special. While they care for a wide range of native species, they have a strong focus on reptiles, from lace monitors and blue-tongue lizards to turtles.

They are also connected to a great network of reptiles rescue volunteers as well as some of Australia leading reptiles vets right here in Victoria! So you can guarantee that the reptiles coming through the shelter are getting the best of care.

Now Terri and Beck are looking to expand their work even further to assist with venomous snake rescue.

Terri has recently completed her venomous snake handling training and is now working towards obtaining the necessary licensing and equipment to safely carry out this important work.

If you’re someone who cares about protecting and advocating for our often misunderstood native reptiles, especially our iconic Australian venomous snakes, this is a cause well worth supporting.

Every bit of support helps make a difference.

Snake ID Challenge 🐍

Can anyone guess what species this is?

Here are a few clues to help you out:

• A small, secretive species that spends much of its time under rocks, logs, and debris.

• Often mistaken for a juvenile brown snakes due to its slender build, earthy colouration and head markings.

• Has a distinctive defensive posture when threatened which actually inspired part of its common name.

• Found across semi-arid and inland areas of Victoria.

Drop your guesses in the comments and I’ll reveal the answer later 🐍

Hi Bendigo

I understand that many of the calls I receive are from first-time callers or people who may not follow my page, however I wanted to share this update here for the sake of clarity and transparency.

At this stage, my on-call residential snake removal services are temporarily on pause due to unforeseen personal circumstances. Right now, my time and dedication need to be focused elsewhere.

This hasn’t been an easy decision. This season has been particularly demanding, and while I have worked incredibly hard to build my business and reputation since 2001, my family needs me at the moment, and I am only one person.

I don’t have staff behind me, and while I’m proud to run my business independently, it does mean I sometimes have to make difficult choices.

I remain committed to honouring existing bookings and scheduled commitments.

For any new residential call-outs, I will be referring enquiries to other trusted local licensed snake catchers.

If anything changes, I will be sure to keep you all updated.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support.

Kind regards,
Tameeka

Day 2 of 2 at Woodlea Estate, Aintree 🐍

Back in Aintree today with Richie from
Compassionate Animal Rescue & Exclusion - CARE continuing our Snake Safety & Awareness Workshop with the residents of the Woodlea Estate.

We once again covered a broad range of topics, from understanding the importance of the natural ecological landscapes woven throughout the estate, to recognising snakes as bioindicators of a healthy ecosystem.

The presence of snakes often reflects balanced habitats, strong prey populations and functioning biodiversity.... a reminder that these environments are doing exactly what they’re designed to do.

We also discussed how to respond appropriately to a potential encounter on private property, practical risk-reduction strategies around the home, and most importantly, how education builds confidence.

The goal isn’t fear, it’s understanding.
And through understanding comes respect and a new appreciation for the vital role our local snake species play in the environment.

Thank you to the Woodlea community for the engagement, thoughtful questions and willingness to learn.

Day 1 of 2 – Melton, Victoria 🐍

Today I teamed up with Richie from
Compassionate Animal Rescue & Exclusion - CARE to deliver a Snake Safety & Awareness Workshop for the Melton community.

It’s always a privilege to share practical knowledge that helps people better understand our local snake species, how to identify them, reduce risk around homes and workplaces, and respond appropriately if an encounter occurs.

Education is one of the most powerful tools we have in achieving safe, effective and harmonious coexistence with wildlife. Looking forward to Day 2 tomorrow and continuing some great conversations around living confidently alongside our native snakes.

Not all call-outs are what they seem… 🐍

Last week I attended what started as a fairly standard brown snake call at a factory site in East Bendigo, but it quickly turned into something a bit unusual.

This snake had a noticeable lump near the cloaca that didn’t look like a recent meal (too far down the body) and also didn’t appear related to normal waste passing. It was definitely out of the ordinary.

Rather than release the snake straight away, I made the call to have it assessed. With the help of our local reptile vet, we carried out an X-ray, which revealed a large mass measuring around 6 cm.

At this stage there are a few possibilities as to what it could be, but nothing can be confirmed yet. The snake has now been transferred into care and will undergo further assessment with specialist reptile vets.

A good reminder that wildlife call-outs aren’t always straightforward....sometimes there’s more going on beneath the surface.

Watch this space for updates.

UPDATE - Frank has been found and is now back home.

**🐍 Missing Pet – Bendigo 🐍**

Hi everyone, please keep an eye out for a much-loved pet snake named **Frank** who is missing from Kangaroo Flat.

Frank is a **large Olive Python** who has gone on a little adventure. He is about 10ft long so he isn't hard to miss!!

He belongs to a young boy with autism, and he plays a very important role in helping with calmness and emotional regulation, so his safe return means a great deal to the family.

**Important:** Frank is **not dangerous**. He is a gentle, non-venomous snake. With today’s extreme heat, he’s likely seeking a cool, sheltered spot and may be resting during the day, becoming more active later tonight.

If you see Frank or have any information, please **call or text 0473 939 743**.

Thank you Bendigo for looking out for him 💛

For an animal with such incredibly refined senses, sometimes things still go wrong.
Every now and then they end up in situations that make you stop and think, “How on earth did you manage that? What were you thinking?”

This Eastern Brown Snake had become stuck while moving through the structure, most likely while actively hunting.
I’ve dealt with similar situations before, but today’s extreme heat made conditions especially harsh.
Unfortunately, this snake didn’t make it and succumbed to overheating before help could make a difference.

It’s a reminder that wildlife is constantly navigating human-made environments, and even highly adapted animals can get into trouble. The heat we feel is tough.... but for wildlife in exposed areas, it can be deadly.

Stay mindful of sheds, roof spaces, and structures during hot weather, they often attract prey, which in turn attracts snakes
