I got a call yesterday about some magpies who’s nest had been blown out of the tree with this terrible wind. They couldn’t get the nest back to where it was originally in the tree and there were no forks in the tree to sit it on, so I suggested they somehow secure the box anywhere up the tree and as high as they could go and put the whole original nest in the box. They had to get it back up there to keep the young from predators. One little magpie was already out of the nest, was cold, and not in the best condition, the other two were very healthy so I suggested they get the healthy ones back up the tree and the weak one in care.
Kerry got right into action and enlisted the help of Annie, who together, managed to do a fantastic job of getting the nest back up in the tree and out of harms way.
The birds have been monitored yesterday and today and have been observed being well looked after by their parents. The other baby is in care -a-roo wildlife sanctuary and is so far doing very well.
What a fantastic team effort. Well done Kerry and Annie
It serves as a reminder to everyone to keep a lookout for other birds and babies in the same situation. And please if you need help with repositioning the nest to a safe place, contact a competent wildlife carer who can walk you through how to do it.
This is a great outcome for the babies and their parents. Thanks you ladies
