If you visited The Way 2 weeks ago, you would've seen Deb busily preparing for the Royal Hobart Show. Our customers are a lovely bunch and the well-wishes and encouragement were so sweet. And today we picked up our ribbons...
Deb says, "It's absolutely no secret that I love to cook. The kitchen is my happy place, and almost all of my treasured memories involve cooking and showing hospitality. I was first let loose in the kitchen when I was 10 years old with a Shortbread Recipe, I mixed up sugar with salt and concocted what my dad said tasted like "Fish and Chips" and he was the only one who ate it. Thankfully, I improved with the help of my two grandmas and Home Ec teachers with a whole lotta patience.
They say hospitality is a gift, and I truly believe that it is, but that gift didn't really kick in until I started Dinner Club Mondays in my 1 bedroom cottage in Brisbane. Every week for 3 years, I'd have an open house, and everyone was invited for dinner. The first week, 1 beautiful lady rocked up. It didn't matter that it was only 1 person. 1 person matters in the hospitality heart...That grew and one night, we squeezed 38 people into that tiny abode. We never ran out of food, and that is down to Jesus taking the wheel when I'd go ingredient shopping. I'd have a plan of what we were having and a list, but I'd say, "OK Lord, how much do I need?" And it was always enough! (Sometimes we were collecting leftovers feeding the five thousand style, Thanks Jesus!) He is my sidekick in the kitchen (but does not own any of the mistakes, missteps or burnt offerings, that's all on me. He definitely had no part in my Cauliflower Cake experiment (smelt and tasted like feet, Tim refused to touch it.) and any successes come down to Him guiding me.
He's spoken up from how long I should stir something, what needs to go in or be left out, what should be on the menu, telling me to check the oven when I've got distracted and giving me the cheer squad I've needed when I've been exhausted...and still after all this time, He tells me how much of an ingredient I need to buy and I think that's pretty special.
And sure, good cooking involves experience and a love for it, but I can guarantee, without Jesus being in the middle of it all, I would be the Queen of Packet Mixes and I'd have done far worse than a Cauliflower Cake. All cooking in The Way is covered with a good deal of "Help me Jesus" and we're all blessed the more for it.
Last week we received the Highest Points in Culinary Crafts at the Royal Hobart Show (maybe I was the only entrant 🤣) and that was all God's glory because He got in that kitchen and told me what to do. Is that an unfair advantage? Probably, but when The King of the Universe is making scones with you, it's going to be blessed. Thank you Jesus for the Michelin Star help to this little cafe cook. Amen."
Come on In for "Award Winning" goodness!
