Meet Basil, the garden center’s unofficial supervisor. Basil had wandered into the garden supply store one rainy afternoon and never left. With his plush tabby coat and a knack for napping in the most unexpected places, he quickly became a beloved fixture among customers and staff.

One sunny morning, Basil discovered the perfect resting spot a long plastic planter tray. Positioned among bags of compost and flower seeds, the tray was snug, warm, and just the right size for a cat of his…generous proportions. Basil climbed in, stretched luxuriously, and promptly fell into a blissful sleep, his belly on full display.

Shoppers passing by couldn’t resist snapping pictures. “Look at him!” they’d exclaim. “Is he for sale with the garden supplies?”

But Basil wasn’t just a decoration. He had a job to do or so he believed. Each day, he’d inspect deliveries by sitting on the freshest soil bags and test the comfort of new gardening tools by curling up on them. Employees swore their sales increased because of Basil’s calming presence. “People come in for plants and leave with pots, mulch, and a dozen photos of Basil.”

As seasons passed, Basil became a local celebrity. He was featured in a gardening magazine under the title "The Cat Who Grew a Community." Shoppers came from miles away, not just for plants, but to see the laid-back tabby who turned a simple garden center into the coziest place in town.

🌿 The moment I realised I was building someone else’s dream… (little Shorty story time)

So this is me sorting the fencing on our property. But I want to take you back to where life was very different for me and my family…

For years, I thought I was doing all the right things.

Work harder.
Earn more.
Keep pushing.
Keep climbing.

And while there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that path…

One day back in around 2020 (IYKYK), I stopped and asked myself:

“Is the life I’m building actually the life I want?”

Or have I simply followed the path I was told would make me happy?

That question hit me hard.

Because the more I thought about it, the more I realised I wasn’t craving more stuff…

I was craving more freedom.

More time.

More connection.

More purpose.

More skills.

More confidence in my ability to provide for myself and my family.

And that was the beginning of everything.

The garden.
The remedies.
The food.
The self-sufficiency journey.
The community.

Fee and I put all our skills and knowledge on the table and started to use them.. REALLY use them.

Not because we wanted to escape life…

But because we wanted to build one that felt more aligned with who we truly are and who we were becoming.

Have you ever had a moment where you stopped and questioned the path you were on?

👇 Have you ever felt this way?

🦉 Major retailers are committing to remove deadly rat poisons from their shelves - and we need your help to hold them to it.

Coles has claimed it has already pulled second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides (SGARs) from sale. Meanwhile, Bunnings, Mitre 10, and IGA have committed to follow by 30 June. Woolworths has confirmed removal by end of July 2026.

These are the same poisons that have been found in over 80% of sampled Powerful Owls, 91% of sampled brushtail possums, and behind the deaths of countless animals across Australia. They do not belong on the shelves of hardware or grocery stores.

Commitments are only as good as the follow-through 👇

Next time you're shopping, take 30 seconds to walk past the aisle where these products are found. If you spot any SGAR products still on the shelf at Bunnings, Mitre 10, IGA, or Woolworths - take a photo, note the store, and report it.

Every report helps us document compliance and hold retailers accountable.

The breed that lays 350 eggs a year is often done producing by year three. The breed that lays 250 a year is still going at ten. Picking a backyard layer by annual egg count alone misses the real math.

- Black Australorp — 250-300 eggs/year, lives 6-10 years. Gentle, quiet, cold-hardy. Dark plumage makes aerial predators mistake her for a crow.

- Barred Rock — 250 eggs/year, lives 8-12 years. Heritage breed that lays consistently for years, not just seasons. May still be producing at age ten.

- Buff Orpington — 200-280 eggs/year, lives 8-10 years. The gentlest breed most keepers own. Heavy, fluffy, often described as a lap chicken. Excellent broody mother.

- Rhode Island Red — 250-300 eggs/year, lives 5-8 years. Classic American farm chicken. Hardy, forages well, lays in all seasons. Dark brown eggs.

- Easter Egger — 200-280 eggs/year, lives 6-8 years. Blue, green, olive, or pink eggs. Not technically a breed — mixed chickens carrying the blue egg gene. Expect variation.

- ISA Brown — 300-350 eggs/year, lives 2-4 years. Highest annual layer and shortest-lived. A commercial hybrid bred to convert feed into eggs fast. The math: 350 × 3 years = 1,050 lifetime eggs. A Barred Rock at 250 × 10 = 2,500.

Lifetime production, temperament, and health matter more than the number on the hatchery page.
