For those that don't feel like they are succeeding in finding a career. From my experiance I feel like you need to think about what you are passionate about! Regardless of what it is, there will be a line of work out there for you that will stick. In order for you to be happy and "want to wake up and go to work" there needs to be a purpose. For me it's cars! I have been born to love cars. I wanted to be a mechanic but as a woman we all know deep down we are not as strong as men physically.. I randomly went for a parts interpreter role back in goodness knows when! Like 2011 minimum. Why? Because I love cars! I grew up in a rotary filled workshop with an externally knowledgeable and passionate car loving father! I applied for something I had no idea about. I at the time had no idea what a parts interpreter was. But I took the plunge. And guess what! I DIDNT GET THE JOB! But at that interview Marcus showed me what the role involved as I was eager to find out. Even though I didn't get the job he opened my eyes as to what I truly wanted to do. After my application was REJECTED, I sent Marcus an email saying "Thank you for showing me what the role involved, it has opened my eyes to what I want as a career"... much to my surprise I got a reply! he replied "you know what, I could do with a parts driver, if you will accept this offer we will see if you can progress into parts interpreting" LOL! I took the job obviously with so much motivation and excitement and when he said to "work my way up!"..... that I did and ten fold haha!!!!! I have Marcus to thank for my interpreting career ❤
Less then a year it took me to not only get to where I wanted to be... But a busy trade telephone room. Normally that's the top job. And I was juggling over 7 different franchises and acing it! Why? Because my passion was in that line of work. He also put me through the MTA (motor trades association) on a apprenticship for a cert 3 which included a lot of books mechanic apprentices have to do. Which meant if I ever did want to be a mechanic, I would have completed so many books already.
And not only that but I walked into this job thinking I knew all of the parts under a bonnet! Boy I was wrong! But thankfully because I had that passion I picked it up very quickly. Not only that but because I broke so many cars! John Boyed (Dad) for the many sleepless nights doing engine and trans swaps lol! He taught me every time I broke some thing, what it was I broke and why it may have broke. But now I can confidently say that not only am I good at parts interpreting but I am also good at diagnosing issues with vehicles.
My father is my idol! He is the bees knees when it comes to cars. When I was born he wanted a boy... But he got a girl. Little did he know i would follow his footsteps 💜
I had my first child in 2014 And went back into parts full time as a single mother of a child with a disability and struggled. So I thought of a business idea and went through the NEIS program which is a course doing cert 3 in micro business and guess what I chose?.... Car Detailing. While my passion wasn't cleaning 🤦♀️ I knew I was bloody good at it.
I spent weeks at the course trying to come up with a business name, while all of the other participants had theirs. I listened to every word my mentor spoke. Every bit of advice. And to help with the name Diana (My mentor) asked "Why do you want to detail cars Katrena?" Because cars are my passion was my reply of course. I then thought "I Indulge in cars" BOOM there was my name. AUTO INDULGENCE! now that I own this name I can use it for my ultimate dream of owning a workshop one day as I didn't include "Mobile Car Detailing" on the register.
My business was so successful that I was booking out up to 2 months in advance. Less then a year it took me to detail a Ferarri! And also regular high end clients such as Mercedes. I still brought my passion to Auto Indulgence by not only cleaning but also helping them when they had issues with their cars. I made a 10k turnover in my first year of business! As a single mother. And to this day I have people come to me and tell me how the NEIS program use my story to this day and how I inspired them to progress in their business.
Diana would tell you how I also broke down in tears at the course a couple of times as I feared "I WAS NOT GOING TO BE GOOD ENOUGH"!
I was diagnosed with ADHD only 8 months ago. So I also did this all with a hyperactive negative brain that use to think I was not good enough, I won't get the job, I suck at my job, I'm going to get no where, I won't get this job because I have no experiance etc etc. I suffer from RSD on top of my ADHD and use to suffer severe OCD. But now I am medicated and diagnosed and have a over the top understanding of Adhd I can now be more positive and try help those that are suffering with finding work.
What I'm trying to say is. Find your passion. When you find that passion, follow that as a career. Because it will stick! And dont for a second doubt your ability to work. If you keep getting knocked back for jobs that you know you would enjoy, find another way to get it! Like emailing the head office showing your interest. Make a cover letter when applying stating your passion and how it would benefit their business. Or start your own :) it can be done.
Think about it! And dont forget to share this post if you know someone struggling to find work or lacking motivation :)
Yours truly !
