Michelin has developed a revolutionary airless tire called Uptis, short for Unique Puncture-Proof Tire System. According to Michelin, Uptis uses flexible composite spokes instead of air, which means it cannot go flat or suffer blowouts. This design eliminates the need for regular pressure checks and reduces the risk of tire-related accidents. The tire is built as a combined wheel-and-tire unit and is made from a mix of rubber and high-strength resin embedded with fiberglass.

According to Global Fleet, Uptis has already been tested on public roads in Detroit using Chevrolet Bolt EVs, thanks to a partnership between Michelin and General Motors. These trials marked the first time an airless tire was used on passenger vehicles outside of controlled environments. Uptis has also been deployed in pilot delivery fleets, where its durability and low maintenance needs are especially valuable.

Michelin believes Uptis could significantly reduce the number of tires discarded due to punctures or uneven wear.
