These ants currently have several areas listed by the Invasive Species Council around Townsville. Any pet that spends time outdoors in infested suburbs (such as Douglas, Alligator Creek, or Black River) is potentially at risk. Rather than biting, they spray a formic acid. While a few ants will merely irritate your pet, a large colony or continued exposure can cause permanent harm, especially if animals are confined in a kennel or an aviary.
They are opportunistic nesters, so their larvae will often be spotted in sites like leaf litter, mulch, woody debris, or even discarded items like car parts and drink cans. They rarely dig deep into the soil unless they are using existing cracks or animal burrows.
