We’re a finalist! 🍷

Biogone has been named a finalist for The ‘MGA Insurance’ Sustainability Award at the 2026 W**e Industry Impact Awards.

W**eries ship a lot of boxes, sealed with tape and wrapped onto pallets with stretch film. Our entry was about that plastic: the packing tape, stretch wrap, shipping and packing materials the w**e industry relies on every day, and what happens to them after they’re thrown away.

What really happens to plastic in landfill? Let us explain it really simply. 🧐

Modern landfills are sealed off from the world. Tonnes and tonnes of rubbish, packed down and covered over, with hardly any sunlight and almost no oxygen.

Most plastic isn’t made for that. Regular plastic can take years or centuries to break down in landfill, and can break into microplastics along the way. Many alternatives were designed for compost or recycling, not landfill, so once they end up there, they break down differently, slowly or barely at all.

We all use everyday plastic products. It’s strong, durable and protective, and sometimes there’s no better material for the job. But with around 85% of Australia’s plastic waste ending up in landfill, we wanted to face that reality and do something about it.

Fair question, actually.

Collection day feels like the end of it. Truck comes, bin's empty, out of sight, sorted. But actually that's not where the story ends - it's barely halfway.

From there it gets separated into streams. Some of it's recovered, some recycled, some not. And a fair bit - plastic especially - ends up in landfill regardless of which bin it started in.

So the real question isn't just which bin. It's what happens once it lands.

That's the part we think about at Biogone.
