Public Health Alert for Agnes Water & Surrounding Areas

Residents in and around Agnes Water & 1770 are being advised to take precautions following confirmed cases of melioidosis in Central Queensland.

Melioidosis is a serious and potentially life-threatening infection caused by bacteria found in soil and muddy water. After periods of heavy rain and flooding, the risk of exposure can increase, particularly when people come into contact with contaminated water or mud.

How to reduce your risk:

• Avoid walking or wading through floodwater or muddy areas
• When cleaning up after flooding, wear enclosed water-resistant footwear and protective gloves
• Cover any cuts, abrasions or sores with a waterproof dressing
• Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water, especially before eating or drinking

People with diabetes, chronic health conditions, or weakened immune systems are at higher risk of serious illness.

⚕️ Seek medical attention urgently if you develop:

• Sudden fever
• Cough or breathing problems after exposure to floodwater
• A cut or wound that becomes dirty, red, swollen, or painful

With recent wet weather affecting parts of the region, it’s important for our community to stay aware and take simple precautions to protect ourselves and others.

⚠️ Kerbside Collection – Service Disruption ⚠️

Due to this weekend's rainfall causing road closures, kerbside collection services will not occur on Monday, 9 March, in the following areas:
• Agnes Water
• Seventeen Seventy
• Captain Creek
• Baffle Creek
• Rosedale
• Lowmead

♻️ All Transfer Stations will remain OPEN (weather permitting).

We appreciate your patience and understanding while these conditions continue. Further updates will be provided when kerbside collection services can safely resume.
