It’s that time of year again to repost this important fact: covering prams does not shield from heat, it increases it!
We all know that cars heat up rapidly on a hot day, but what about prams?
Researchers in Sweden suggested that by covering a pram - even with a thin cloth like a muslin wrap - actually creates a furnace-like heat within the pram, reducing the air circulation.
Follwing on from this, a Swedish newspaper conducted some experiments to see just how hot it could get inside the stroller. They left a stroller out in the Swedish sun between 11.30am and 1pm on a warm day. Without a cover the pram the temperature reached 22ºC. A thin cover was placed over for the next 30 minutes, by which time the heat has risen to 34ºC. After an hour it had reached 37ºC.
Remember, that is Swedish summer heat - around 30ºC tops - here in Dubai it gets much warmer so we conducted our own little experiment.
We used 2 identical bassinets, one covered with a light muslin cloth and one without: after one hour the covered bassinet reached 42.5 Celsius, while the uncovered one was at 39,9.
For many of you this may sound like common sense, but we see covered prams around constantly: in parks, on the beach etc, so please help us in raising awareness and share this information with other parents.
We need to ensure proper air circulation and keep baby cool as much as possible.
