CLEAN YOUR POOL AFTER RAINS

It is a good idea to clean or backwash your filter after a heavy rain, flood, or major storm. This will help prevent your pool from turning cloudy or green.

Clean out the debris in all of your baskets.
Use a net or vacuum to get all debris out of the pool. You want to get the debris out of your pool as soon as possible. The longer debris sits in the pool the more likely you are to get stains and have unbalanced water chemistry. Don’t wait for your pool cleaner robot to pick the debris up.

After the debris has been cleared brush down the walls and the top of any steps and benches.

Complete the previous steps as quickly as possible and then test your water chemistry. Make any necessary adjustments to your pH and Alkalinity. Once the pH and Alkalinity are adjusted you can then shock your pool. The shock treatment will spike the chlorine level and oxidize your water. Let the pool run for 24hrs and monitor your filter pressure. After 24hrs, re-test your chemistry and make any final adjustments.

Here’s just a few of the pool chemicals you might need to pick up after a heavy rain:

Chlorine or Salt
Shock
Alkalinity
Muriatic Acid
Calcium Increaser (Generally after a major storm such as a Hurricane)
Cyanuric Acid (Generally after a major storm such as a Hurricane)
Phosphate Remover (Only necessary if the phosphate level has increased as a result of the storm)
Algaecide (If your pool has started showing signs of Yellow, Green, or Black Algae)

You Need To Keep An Eye On The Water Level

As important as the chemical composition of the water is, the physical water level is just as important. The levels will naturally fluctuate after a heavy rainstorm or an afternoon of kids doing cannonballs.

You want to maintain a level that is halfway up the opening of your skimmer. If the water is too low, simply use a garden hose to add the necessary amount of water back in. If the water level is too high, rent a submergible pump from a home improvement store to drain the excess.

However, if you’re pool’s liner is a vinyl or fiberglass material that could be easily damaged by the weight of the pump, consider consulting a professional. When you’ve reached the appropriate water level, remember to recheck the chemicals. The water level fluctuations will have thrown them off balance.

Chemicals Costing Too Much? Give Baking Soda A Try

There’s no denying that pool chemicals can be expensive to purchase, so why not get a little help straight from the grocery store? Most pool stores suggest using sodium bicarbonate to control the alkalinity of a pool without drastically reducing the PH levels.

They will try to sell overpriced solutions in order to get the job done.As it turns out, regular baking soda does the same job as sodium bicarbonate for only a fraction of the price. All baking soda boxes even have “sodium bicarbonate” listed on their ingredients label.

Take a look!If you’re worried that using baking soda will mean doing a lot of complicated mathematical conversions, don’t be. Baking soda has the same concentration of sodium bicarbonate per pound as the solutions, so the amount you’d need to add to your water would be identical.

Keep a Pumice Stone Handy

If the grout between your tiles, or the plaster or concrete liner of your pool, starts showing signs of algae growth that regular brushing won’t remove, give the infected area a rub with a pumice stone.

The gentle yet abrasiveness of the pumice should be, at least in the early stages of algae growth, sufficient to break through the algae’s external protective layer without damaging the grouting/pool surface, and thereby allow your pool chemicals to get to work on destroying the algae.

Throw a Tennis Ball or Two into the Pool
This is an old pro trick that’s a cheap, effortless, and effective way to remove surface oils caused by suntan lotions, makeup, body and hair oils, etc. – all of which can lead to cloudy water and/or a depletion of your pool’s free chlorine levels.

What happens is that the oils get absorbed into the tennis balls’ fluffy surface. Therefore, newer tennis balls work better than older ones. Oh, and try not to chuck into the pool that tennis ball your dog’s been chewing on!
