Look at where this nest is built. Straight on top of the spikes. 🪹 🐦

Someone had already been out to this property in George and put spikes up. The birds built on them anyway, because spikes were the wrong choice for the species nesting there.
Any good product will fail if it is used in the wrong place or on the wrong bird. The problem is not the spikes, the issue is the knowledge of the installer. 😬

We walked the whole roof and found three separate problems. Pigeons under the solar panels. Red-winged Starlings on the exposed beams. European Starlings coming in through a section of the roof edge. Each one needed a different answer, and all three were done in one visit.

If you are getting a company out, ask them which species they are proofing against. If they cannot tell you, you are paying for a guess.

This bag came out of a client's ceiling in George. 🐦

Look at how much fine dust and grit is sitting in the bottom of it. That is what builds up under a nest, and it does not stay in the roof. It filters down through light fittings and cornice gaps into the rooms below.

If someone in the house has been sniffing, coughing or itching with no obvious cause, the roof is worth checking.

We got called out to a noise on the roof, climbed up, and found a chick. 🐥
A Speckled Pigeon had nested on this roof in Kraaibosch Country Estate and there was two chicks in it when we found them, still far too young to fly or even walk at a few days old.
So we packed up and rebooked the job for four weeks' time, once the chicks have fledged and left on their own.
No indigenous bird nest gets removed with young in it. The proofing still goes in, it just goes in after they have gone, and the result for the client is exactly the same.

This is what was sitting above the ceiling of a office in Mossel Bay 😬.
Some of the nests had been built in the roof insulation and had broken through, hanging down into the ceiling. Years of material, dust and droppings, right above the office where staff are seated 8+ hours a day.
We cleared it all out and closed off the full roof edge, not just the hole they were using. Birds pushed out of one gap simply move to the next one, which is why patching a single spot never holds.

Working with bees at night, under red light. 🔦🐝
Bees cannot see red, so they stay calm and in the box while we work.
This owl box in Oudtshoorn was mounted about five metres up on a house and a swarm had moved in. We sealed the opening, roped the box, and lowered it slowly with one person on the roof and another guiding it down the ladder.
The colony is alive and will be rehoused soon.

We do not exterminate bees 🐝.

Those marks on the solar panels are not dirt 👀

Birds had built their nest in the soffit directly above this client's array in Blue Mountain Village, and everything that came out of that nest landed on the panels below.
Droppings on panels block light, bake on in the sun and eat into the surface over time. You lose output every month the nest stays up there.

If your allergies have flared up for no reason lately, look up. 🐦

This is what came out of the ceiling of a home in Dana Bay. Starlings had been nesting above the bedrooms and there was a thick layer of old nest material, dust, dried droppings and shredded ceiling insulation sitting on the boards.
That dust does not stay in the roof. It works its way through light fittings, cornice gaps and any hole in the ceiling board, and you breathe it in.
The owner had been taping over the holes the starlings pecked through the ceiling board.
We removed the nests, cleaned out the debris and sealed the roof properly.
Quiet ceiling, clean roof, no way back in.

A pigeon coming down the chimney and landing on the braai is not how anyone wants to start a weekend. 🍗🥩+🐦=🚫
That is what had been happening at a home in Kingswood Golf Estate in George. Pigeons were getting into two open chimneys, and once inside a bird can slip down into the flue and cannot get back out. It ends up in the fireplace, or dead somewhere in the flue.
The bigger issue is what they leave behind. Nest material packed into a chimney is dry twigs and feathers sitting directly above a fire you are about to light. It can also block the flue, which pushes smoke back into the house.

We closed off both chimneys. No more birds in the flue, and the chimneys can draw properly.
If your chimney is open at the top, it is worth a look. Every chimney should be bird proofed, and most people only find out theirs is not when something comes down it. 🔥
