Worcester feels a little quieter today. A little less certain.

For years, if danger slithered into our gardens or homes, there was one man who would answer the call without hesitation. Andre du Preez—our "Oom Slang"—was more than a snake rescuer. He was a shield for this community.

He didn't just relocate wildlife; he brought peace of mind to a community, and a rare kind of courage to every doorstep he visited. He faced the things most of us run from, and he did it with a steady hand and a heart of gold.

But behind the legend of the snake hook was a husband, a father, and a friend. A man who loved this town and the people in it.

At Grave Cleaners, we believe that a life lived for others is a life that should never be forgotten.

We would like to Du Preez family and the people of Worcester today. We don’t just preserve stone; we strive to preserve the dignity of the legacies left behind.

Oom Slang, you saved more than just snakes—you saved us from our fears. Your boots may be empty, but the mark you left on our hearts is permanent.

The crosses at the Buttskop crossing are more than markers; they are a permanent heartbeat for our community.

They stand as a daily reminder of the lives that changed ours 16 years ago, and they deserve to shine as brightly as the memories of the children they represent.

A Date Forever Etched in Our Hearts.

August 25, 2010.

It’s a date that stopped time. A morning that started like any other changed everything forever, taking ten bright, beautiful young lights far too soon at the Buttskop crossing.

At Welmoed cemetery, this memorial stands as a permanent testament to those children. It is more than just concrete, tile, and plaques. It is a physical promise that their names, their laughter, and their potential will never be forgotten.

It is a difficult spot to visit, but a necessary one. We honour them today and every day.
