Have you ever wondered what the Rubber Threads on your new Tyres are or do???

While many people have theorised that they are for indicating tyre wear, for noise reduction or air ventilation, they don’t actually serve any purpose post production. They are simply a by-product of the tyre manufacturing process.

Their technical name is vent spews but they can also be referred to as sprue nubs, tyre nibs, gate marks or nippers. It technically helps to avoid any voids or holes and defects in the tires during vulcanisation process.

These rubber threads are created during the manufacturing process. To make a tyre, rubber is injected into a tyre mould and air pressure is used to spread the liquid rubber into all the nooks and crannies. During the application of heat and air, there is a risk of air bubbles forming between the rubber and the mould.

While they serve no purpose in how your tyre performs, their presence indicates that the tyre is new. Tyres that have been in service for some time will eventually be free of the rubber hairs as they wear off with regular use of the tyres.

πŸ€£πŸ˜…πŸ˜‚ Stop taking Tyre Advice from Rookies!!!!!

One of the simplest – and most important – things you can do to keep your tyres in good shape, is to make sure that they are correctly inflated. Failure to maintain correct tyre pressures may result in fast and uneven treadwear, improper vehicle handling, and excessive heat build-up, resulting in tyre failure.

REGULAR TYRE PRESSURE CHECKS
You should check your tyre’s pressure at least once a month, before each trip, and each morning you drive during a trip. Ideally, tyre pressure should be measured when tyres are cold, that is, before doing any driving on tyres. Only β€œbleed” or reduce air pressure from a hot tyre when you need to lower pressures to drive on particular terrain but remember to re-inflate your tyres when you reach your destination or return to terrain that requires higher pressure.

MEASURING TYRE PRESSURE
It’s essential to be accurate when inflating your tyres. Don’t try to β€œeyeball” the pressure – a tyre can lose half its pressure without looking flat. Instead, use a reliable tyre pressure gauge. It’s a good idea to have your own gauge.

UNDER-INFLATION
If your vehicle’s tyres are under-inflated by as little as 6 psi, it could lead to tyre damage. Additionally, the tyre’s tread life could be reduced significantly with tyres wearing more on the outside shoulders. Lower inflation pressure allows the tyre to flex more as it rolls, causing internal heat to build up, which could lead to tyre failure. Also, low pressures increase rolling resistance and cause a reduction in fuel economy. You would also find a significant loss of steering precision and cornering stability. While 6 psi doesn’t seem excessively low, remember, it usually represents about 20% of the tyre’s recommended pressure. You should also be aware that the load capacity of your tyres is reduced at lower pressures.

OVER-INFLATION
If your tyres are over-inflated by as little as 6 psi, they could be damaged more easily when driving over potholes or debris on the road. Overinflation also causes tyres to wear in the centre of the tyre’s tread, which will reduce the tread life; higher inflated tyres will also give you a much harsher ride.

IMPORTANT FACTORS WHEN SELECTING TYRE PRESSURES
There is no universal β€œright” pressure for all tyres. The proper inflation level is dependent on many factors such as what tyres you have, type of vehicle, amount of load, how the vehicle is being driven and condition of the road, to name a few. The important thing to remember is that as load increases, you will need to increase pressure but never exceed the maximum pressure stamped on the tyre’s sidewall. For harsher road surfaces, a lower pressure with lower speed may be needed to avoid tyre damage. This could mean the difference between an empty tray in a UTE vs. a loaded tray.

In the early 1900s, the shortage of rubber and the challenges associated with filling Tyres with air during the First World War led to a significant need for alternative solutions. In response to this problem, German engineers devised a groundbreaking invention in 1916β€”a steel spring Tyre.

The Tyre was specifically designed by the Germans to address the scarcity of rubber and the unreliable nature of traditional rubber Tyres. Their goal was to create a Tyre that not only offered a viable alternative to rubber but also provided enhanced reliability, particularly for military vehicles that required robust and durable Tyre solutions.

The innovative steel spring Tyre was first implemented on a Protos vehicle, showcasing its potential for military applications. The Tyre design incorporated a series of steel springs arranged in a circular pattern, which replaced the conventional rubber construction. These springs were strategically placed to provide both support and flexibility, allowing the Tyre to withstand the rigorous demands of military operations while offering improved traction on various terrains.

One of the key advantages of the steel spring Tyre was its resistance to punctures and damage, which significantly reduced the need for constant maintenance and Tyre replacements. This attribute made it particularly attractive for military vehicles operating in challenging environments, such as battlefields or rough terrain.

Furthermore, the German engineers believed that the steel spring Tyre's performance would not be affected by adverse weather conditions, a common issue with traditional rubber Tyres. The Tyre's unique design was expected to maintain its reliability and functionality even in extreme temperatures, making it well-suited for military campaigns in diverse climates.

While the steel spring Tyre initially gained attention due to its potential military applications, there was also significant interest in its civilian use. The Tyre's durability and puncture resistance made it an attractive option for commercial vehicles, especially those that frequently traveled on rough roads or encountered sharp debris.

Although the steel spring Tyre demonstrated promise, the end of the First World War and subsequent developments in rubber technology led to a shift back towards traditional rubber Tyres. Rubber became more accessible again, and advancements in Tyre manufacturing techniques and materials improved the reliability and performance of rubber Tyres. As a result, the steel spring Tyre gradually faded from use, becoming a fascinating but short-lived chapter in the evolution of Tyre technology.

Nonetheless, the German engineers' ingenuity in developing the steel spring Tyre during a time of resource scarcity and technological challenges remains a testament to human innovation and adaptability in the face of adversity.

The Tyre Importers Association of South Africa (TIASA) warns that the cost of tyres could increase by up to 41% if the four large domestic tyre producers – Continental, Bridgestone, Goodyear, and Sumitomo, collectively known as the SA Tyre Manufacturers Conference (SATMC) – are successful in their duty application.

TIASA said it is opposing SATMC’s application to the International Trade Administration Commission (ITAC) to impose additional duties of between 8% and 69% on passenger, taxi, bus and truck vehicle tyres imported from China.

The imposition of duties is expected to have a material impact on the price of tyres, not only for passenger vehicles, but also for trucks and for the vast network of taxis and buses that transport citizens across the length and breadth of the country daily. Tyres are the third biggest cost driver in transport, after wages and fuel, the association said.

If the application is successful, the taxi industry will be hit hardest, with the cost of taxi tyres set to increase by 41%, it said. β€œConsumers will also be hit hard, with small passenger vehicle tyres expected to increase by 38-40%; and truck and bus tyres by an average of 17%.”

β€œRising inflation is putting South African consumers and motorists under extreme financial pressure. The consensus is that there appears to be little light at the end of the tunnel,” said Charl de Villiers, chairperson of TIASA.

β€œThe bottom line is that South Africa – and South African motorists and those operating in the trucking, taxi, and mass transport sectors – can ill-afford any interventions which may further drive up road freight or transport costs, which are key drivers of inflation.”

Stats SA noted that transport continues to drive inflation higher. Transport costs continue to climb, with the main driver being the surging price of fuel. The price of fuel was R14.86 in January 2021, and is now as much as R26.74 (inland) per litre.
