Today, November 11th, is Veterans Day. This holiday commemorates the lives of all who served our great nation, both living and deceased.

I encourage all to reflect on the words of George Canning: “When our perils are past, shall our gratitude sleep?”

May we never forget the sacrifices which all Veterans made for our nation, especially those who gave the ultimate sacrifice of their lives.

Today, November 2nd, is All Souls Day- a day of prayer and remembrance for the faithful departed, observed by Christians throughout the world. In honor of the deceased, many pray in intercession for their loved ones, give alms, and visit cemeteries.

In Europe, it is common to visit cemeteries to hold vigils and decorate headstones with lit candles, cakes, and other baked goods. During this month of November, I encourage you to visit a cemetary to engage in this ancient practice of paying respect to those who have gone before us.

Did you know that South Dakota has laws which govern the care of cemeteries?

SD Codified Law 55-12 titled "Cemetery Perpetual Care Funds" lists provisions for the use of perpetual care funds: "for protecting, preserving, improving, and embellishing the cemetery and its appurtenances; preserving and caring, and marking of abandoned or neglected graves; the repairing of monuments or gravestones; and may not be used for any other purpose."

Perpetual care dollars, typically included in the price of a cemetery plot, cover general maintenance of the cemetery as a whole (mowing, signage and pathway upkeep, etc.). What it does not usually cover is individual plot maintenance such as cleaning up twigs and leaves, pulling weeds, flower placement, and headstone cleaning. This is where I can help!

Placing flowers at the graves of loved ones is a long-standing tradition done to honor and remember those who passed before us. I offer flower delivery and placement at grave sites and will also remove them at a later date in accordance with cemetery ordinance.
