Had an experience today at my church cemetery I thought I’d share. We were having vacation bible school and I was going to cook lunch. I decided to clean some headstones until it was time. I was listening to my music mix off YouTube with my AirPods. My music selection is harder rock.
Some may find this strange but I like to talk to the residents. As I was cleaning I kept noticing lyrics from several songs related to cemetery (I put partial lyrics at the end of this message). It played Foo Fighters “Walk” saying I never wanna die and talking about dancing on my grave. The next song was Alice In Chains “Down in a Hole”. I asked them who was playing songs for me. Then as I had my fingers on top of a headstone it played Velvet Revolvers “Slither” which says about keep me under finger then “Yeah, here comes the water. It comes to wash away the sins of you and I” just as I began to rinse the headstone. Then I asked again who was playing those songs. So the chilling part is when I was ready to clean up I challenged them to play me one more song to prove they were controlling the selection. That song was Foo Fighters “My Hero”, which has the chorus
There goes my hero
Watch him as he goes
There goes my hero
He's ordinary
The other interesting thing about the last song was that it was the version that Taylor Hawkins’ son was playing drums in memory of his dad. I was standing by the headstones of the Taylor family at that moment.
One other song that I recalled much later was Audioslave “I Am The Highway”. The first verse is
Pearls and swine bereft of me
Long and weary my road has been
I was lost in the cities
Alone in the hills
No sorrow or pity for leaving, I feel, yeah
Not 100% sure of the meaning but one person said “It has to do with being neglected, mistreated, overlooked and taken for granted by people you care about.” Just like the headstones have been neglected. Another person said It also could be from Mattthew 7:6, “Do not cast your pearls before swine” which is a portion of the Sermon on the Mount.
There were more songs that played but may not have had any relative words. I know some of these words in the songs may not be literal and having another interpretation or being symbolism but it still gave me chills.
The lyrics I pulled from internet:
Foo Fighters “Walk”-
…I'm on my knees, I'm praying for a sign
Forever, whenever, I never wanna die
I never wanna die
I never wanna die
I'm on my knees, I never wanna die
I'm dancing on my grave
I'm running through the fire
Forever, whenever
I never wanna die
I never wanna leave
I'll never say goodbye
Forever, whenever
Forever, whenever…
Alice In Chains “Down in a hole”-
Bury me softly in this womb
I give this part of me for you
Sand rains down and here I sit
Holding rare flowers in a tomb, in bloom
Down in a hole
And I don't know if I can be saved
See my heart, I decorate it like a grave…
Velvet Revolver’s “Slither” -
…Always keep me under finger
…
Yeah, here comes the water
It comes to wash away the sins of you and I
This time you see
Like holy water…
Foo Fighters “My Hero” -
…There goes my hero
Watch him as he goes
There goes my hero
He's ordinary…
Sorry no after cleaning pics taken. I’ll get it tomorrow. The real after picture will be in months.
