Thomas Stewart was an African American inventor from Kalamazoo, Michigan. He earned a patent (US #499,402) in 1893 for his invention of a clamping device that could wring water out of the mop by using a lever without getting their hands wet. He also designed a mop head that could be removed by unscrewing it from the mop handle to allow the mop head to be cleaned thoroughly. Stewart was a prolific inventor who dedicated his life to making our lives easier…we thank him for his brilliance!

If you use a collapsible ironing board to iron your clothes or press fabric, you have Sarah Boone to thank for pioneering the ironing board. Sarah was born into slavery in 1832 as Sarah Marshall.
She and her husband James Boone settled in New Haven, Connecticut after the Civil War where she worked as a dress maker and developed a hinged ironing board. This improvement to the existing bulky ironing board improved the process of ironing shirt sleeves. Sarah expressed that the object of her invention was to “produce a cheap, simple, convenient, and highly effective device, particularly adapted to be used in ironing the sleeves and bodies of ladies garments.”
Sarah was among the first (and few) African Americans to receive a patent for an invention in the 19th century. It is also said that Sarah had been illiterate for most of her life, having only learned to read and write just prior to turning 60 and filing for her patent. She studied many existing drawings and mechanical drawings in order to develop the drawing for her own invention. What an amazing accomplishment. Thomas Jennings was born ‘free’ in NYC and invented and patented a process called “dry scouring,” known as the predecessor to modern day dry cleaning in 1821. He is likely the first African American in USA to receive a patent. Jennings used the majority of his earnings for the fight for abolition. The details of his patented dry scouring method have never been well understood because his patent is one of those known as “X-Patents” which was a group of about 10,000 patents issued between 1790-1836 destroyed in a fire while temporarily stored at the Blodget’s Hotel.
