Randy and Eugene went fishing and crabbing this week out of Newport and caught 7 coho, returning 3 natives, ending with their coho limits.

They also had three crab traps with a total of 40 legal crabs, all big enough they didn’t even measure them!

These are the best days out there on the water!

It was a strange day on the ocean.

Our fishing buddy Randy and I (Eugene, that’s me in the photo) took our boat Crack’n out of Newport on the 4th of July to see if we could connect with some Coho.

As we always do, we dropped our three 36” crab pots north of the Jetty in about 90-100 feet of water. Fishing was great but landing a legal Coho was tough. We managed to catch one legal one. We had planned to fish all day and then recover our TWO limits of crab, which is usually easy to do with ocean crabbing.

We started to hear on the radio that everybody was coming up with no crabs in their pots. I mean, not a single crab in any of their pots. We heard this from fishing guide friends as well as other fisherman that have been limiting out on crab just days before in the same area. With our hopes for a full limit each falling we decided to go pull the pots. Out of our three commercial-size pots we only had 2 females, 2 undersized males, and 4 keepers. Not very good but I suppose still better than zero like the other guys.

If anyone knows what’s going on and why no one seems to be pulling up any crab at all we’d sure love to know why.

This photo was sent to us by Loren from Idaho who’s at the Oregon coast this week clamming and crabbing.

Loren said they snagged 28 Dungeness crab keepers in an hour and a half today!

Thanks for the awesome photo!

We took the Crack’n out Thursday and got some crab! 🦀
Pulled up a lot of females but ended up with a good catch of legal males though. 110 feet of water just north of the jetty in Newport, Oregon.

Crack’n Crab Cleaner - The original game changing tool designed to clean live Dungeness crab quickly and easily!

Our story:
Owners, Eugene Calkins and Tony Thiessen are true sportsman and have always felt the most at home out on the water fishing and crabbing but in 2017 Eugene’s wife Lena read an article about the Domoic Acid found in Dungeness crab (Domoic acid is produced by marine algal blooms under certain conditions. Domoic acid can temporarily build up in crabs, lobsters, clams and other fish and shellfish, making them hazardous to eat for humans, marine mammals, and birds.) causing her to be weary of eating the crab her husband Eugene was bringing home - and as any husband knows, if the wife isn’t eating it, he might not be out catching it - so it was imperative that Eugene figure out a safe and easy way to clean the crab before cooking it so Lena would still eat it and he could still be out there catching it. Not only does cleaning the crab prior to cooking remove all of the potentially harmful Domoic Acid but it subsequently produces a sweeter, cleaner tasting meat as well so it’s a win win.

Shortly thereafter, on one of their many fishing and crabbing trips, Eugene who’s a graduate from OIT, design engineer and an inventor by nature, mentioned to Tony that he had a surprise for him at the end of the day. The suspenseful wait resulted in the presentation of the very first prototype of the Crack’n Crab Cleaner. That first crab cleaner was made from a pice of aluminum mounted on top of a 2x6. It was big, clunky and not easy to store or clean but it worked! So for the next 6 weeks Eugene and Tony played around with the design, materials and portability and came up with what we now know and love today as the Crack’n Crab Cleaner.

Thanks to the Crack’n Crab Cleaner Lena is able to enjoy as much Dungeness crab as she wants without the worry of Domoic Acid and Eugene is still able to spend his free time out there on the water catching them.
