Two recent mosquito-related health updates are making headlines across Virginia:
The Virginia Department of Health is investigating the state’s first-ever documented case of locally acquired dengue virus. Health officials believe a mosquito bit someone who had recently returned from international travel with dengue, then later bit another person, transmitting the virus. The good news? Officials say the overall risk to the public remains low, and there is no evidence of ongoing local spread.
West Nile virus has also been detected in mosquitoes collected at Langley Air Force Base in Hampton, serving as another reminder that mosquito-borne illnesses are active during Virginia’s peak mosquito season.
The best protection is prevention:
• Eliminate standing water around your home by tipping and tossing containers that collect water.
• Wear EPA-approved insect repellent when spending time outdoors.
• Keep window and door screens in good repair.
• Consider professional mosquito control to help reduce mosquito populations around your property.
While the risk of serious illness remains low, reducing mosquito breeding areas and protecting yourself from mosquito bites are the best ways to help protect your family this summer.
