Often you hear that working for family is super hard. Though I know it includes added layers of complication and challenge, in my experience, it was also easily the most rewarding/satisfying/rallying/dare I say FUN stretch of my professional life, prior to being humbled on my knees before the Almighty King of creation in November 2008.
Having worked for my older brother, Anthony Perkins, for ~10 years back in the late '90s/early 2000s, what I want to highlight are the joys God gave me through being under my brother's leadership and care:
1. HARD WORK - being the only female in a highly competitive male environment, I knew I had to pull my own weight. I never wanted anyone accusing my brother of showing favoritism, or me of laziness/not earning whatever victories in the financial world I may have attained. Also, I regarded my sister-in-law and young nephew and niece as an added incentive to not ever slack in my 100% commission job, and to pursue the more difficult path Tony would consistently call me to and expect of me, so we would be above reproach amongst his underlings and my colleagues, and offer our clients the very best service.
2. ENDURANCE - Tony started his business as just him. I came along some time after, watching and scrutinizing him frim afar before jumping ship from my steady corporate position, weighing out the pros and cons, and when I started, I began doing whatever was needed, wearing many hats. I was there to see the business grow from a couple of guys under him, to ~50 people at its height, and then watch my brother fight and press on through the '08 collapse, until I went long enough to burn through my savings and face significant loss (all in God's providence, as i reaped what i had sown, and He used it to level me to a posture of humility that frankly, we all should be at all the time already!). Tony was motivated by his family, his clients, and his reputation. We laughed just about daily together (like, HARD laughter: shedding tears and collapsing to the ground kind of laughter!), we were angry with one another, we shed tears together, we made memories together, we burned the midnight oil together, and it all lent toward the forging of a deeper bond. We still talk multiple times a week, and have a great relationship 15 years after that era of me working for him transitioned out.
3. PERSPECTIVE - my time under my brother's care was claimed by God to bring me to a perspective that goes beyond that which is seen and then unseen...that which is fleeting. Unbeknownst to me, God was teaching me the eternal value of submission to others before He saved me. He graciously allowed me to sacrifice under my brother's care and leadership, to work excellently, and to learn the necessity of not getting lost in the here and now. My brother was instrumental in teaching me the value of meeting people where they're at, to be available and generous, and to strive to es**rt them to deeper hope.
I commend my brother to you all in this intriguing world of social media. He helps people by actively fighting to restore and repair people's credit. I know the economy is in another crazy scene, which has me reflecting on the last season of economic difficulty I was so impacted by, which has me praising God for my brother. I was glad and grateful for Tony's leadership, savvy, and tenacity then, that I wanted to share his business here, with hopes some of YOU might experience even a taste of what I got to in the first decade of my independent, adult life!
