❄️ Winter Storm Check‑In for Jacksonville & Onslow County
With this winter storm rolling through, a lot of folks around Jacksonville and Onslow County are going to wake up to cold temps, ice, and a whole lot of moisture sitting on their homes. Even if everything looks fine right now, winter weather has a way of sneaking into the small places we don’t always think about.
A few things I always tell people to keep an eye on after a storm like this:
🌬 Wind & Debris
Strong gusts push leaves, pine needles, and dirt into siding seams, window sills, and roof edges. When that debris stays packed in, it holds moisture longer than it should.
❄️ Ice Expansion
When water freezes, it expands. That expansion can widen tiny cracks in concrete, stress siding joints, and loosen caulking around windows and doors. You don’t always see the effects until things thaw out.
💧 Surfaces Staying Wet Too Long
Cold, damp weather slows evaporation. That’s when you start seeing:
- mildew on shaded sides of the house
- algae patches
- dark streaks
- wood swelling on decks and fences
🧊 Gutters & Downspouts
Ice can block drainage or weigh gutters down. When meltwater can’t flow, it spills over and runs down siding or pools around the foundation.
🔍 After the Storm: A Simple Walk‑Around Helps
Once things thaw a bit, it’s worth taking five minutes to walk around your home and check for:
- debris buildup in corners or seams
- new stains or dark patches
- water pooling where it shouldn’t
- clogged downspouts
- concrete cracks that look bigger than before
You don’t need to fix everything right away — just noticing early can save headaches later.
