Volt stick is a brand, but are called induction testers. These non-contact devices are great for quick, safe checks to see if a wire is possibly live or energized.

They can give false positives (induced voltage) from nearby wires and false negatives if shielded or DC, so they're not for definitive proof; they're for initial guidance, not final confirmation, requiring a multimeter for true safety verification.

Why They're Useful

Safety: Detects voltage without touching the conductor, reducing shock risk for quick checks.

Convenience: Easy for basic identification of "hot" wires or breaks in simple circuits.

Why They're Not Perfect (Cons & False Readings):
False Positives: Wires bundled together can induce voltage, making the tester light up even if the specific wire is dead.

False Negatives You can miss live voltage if the wire is shielded, the user isn't grounded, the voltage is DC, or the tester itself is faulty.

Not Definitive: The tester shows potential voltage, not absolute absence or presence, so they can't replace proper testing.

Best Practice:
Use for initial screening: Good for finding the general area of live wires.

Always follow up with a multimeter: For final safety confirmation (proving a circuit is dead before working on it), you need a proper meter that tests voltage to ground.

Buy quality: Better brands (like Fluke, Klein) are more reliable than cheap ones.

Everyone should understand that they're handy tools for quick checks but not foolproof, prone to false readings, and should be used cautiously with backup verification for safety.
Non-contact voltage testers give false negatives and with proper use are safe.

A homeowner began noticing a sewer-like smell in their home—but only when the AC was running, and someone flushed the toilet, used the shower, or ran the sink in the second bathroom.

To pinpoint the issue, we camera-scoped both the vent and the drain line. That’s when we discovered the culprit: a break in the pipe caused during a previous PEX installation, allowing sewer gases to escape—especially when airflow from the AC and water usage increased pressure.

With the source found and clearly documented, the homeowner was able to move forward with targeted repairs—no more mystery smells and peace of mind restored!
