👃 A musty smell is trying to tell you something.

You know that smell — you walk into a room and something just smells… off.

Even when you don’t see anything unusual, a persistent musty odor can be a clue that excess moisture is hiding somewhere it shouldn’t be.

Behind walls. Under flooring. Around an AC system. Or in another area you may not be able to see.

Does a musty smell automatically mean mold? No. But covering it up with air fresheners doesn’t tell you what’s causing it either.

The goal is to figure out why it’s there.

Moisture readings, a visual inspection, and when appropriate, mold or indoor air quality testing can help give you answers instead of guesses.

Apparently mold likes a good view. 😅

This one definitely wasn’t at eye level!

But the height wasn’t the most important part of this project. The bigger question was why the growth was happening in the first place.

Poor air circulation between the attic space and the indoor living area was creating conditions that allowed microbial growth to develop along portions of this beautiful vaulted wood ceiling.

So this project wasn’t just about getting scaffolding up there and cleaning what we could see. It was about understanding what was contributing to the problem, addressing the affected areas, and helping correct the conditions behind it.

Because when it comes to mold, what you see is only part of the story.

“Can mold in my home be making me feel sick?”

This is one we hear pretty often — especially when someone says they just don’t feel quite right at home.

Mold exposure can be associated with things like irritated eyes, stuffy nose, coughing, wheezing, or skin irritation, especially for people who are sensitive or allergic to mold.

But here’s the important part:

Those symptoms don’t automatically mean you have a mold problem. And not having symptoms doesn’t mean you don’t.

That’s one reason we don’t like to guess.

Mold can be hidden behind walls, under flooring, around HVAC systems, or in other areas you may never see. And sometimes that “musty” smell people associate with mold can have another source entirely.

🧪 Testing gives us actual information to work with.

Air samples can help determine whether mold spores are elevated indoors and what types are present, rather than relying on what something looks like, smells like, or how someone feels.

If something in your home has you wondering, “Could this be mold?” — testing can be a good place to start.

Sometimes removing the mold is only half the job. 👀

On this project, mold had developed inside an AC closet—but we wanted to know why.

The closet wasn’t properly separated from the attic space above it, allowing hot, humid attic air into an area with cooler surfaces. That combination was contributing to condensation and excess moisture.

We addressed the mold-affected materials, replaced affected insulation, framed and closed in the space with Sheetrock, and cleaned and sealed the remaining surfaces.

Because if you clean up mold without addressing what’s causing the moisture, you may end up right back where you started.

When illness spreads through a household, many people focus on getting better—but forget about frequently touched surfaces throughout the home.

In this case, we performed a whole-home disinfecting treatment using an electrostatic sprayer to help apply an EPA-registered disinfectant to hard, non-porous surfaces.

Every situation is different, and professional disinfecting isn’t necessary for every illness. But for some homes, businesses, or facilities, it can be an important part of returning the space to normal.

🛠️ Tools of the Trade: Dehumidifier

This machine doesn’t blow air—it pulls moisture out of the air.

After water damage, that’s a big deal.

As wet materials dry, all that moisture ends up in the air. If it isn’t removed, the drying process slows down.

The short answer? Not with certainty.

Sure, there are things that can make us suspicious—a musty smell, water stains, or visible discoloration—but none of those automatically mean mold is present.

That’s why we test.

✔️ VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) testing measures airborne chemicals that can affect your home’s indoor air quality. These compounds can come from building materials, household products, furnishings, and other indoor sources.
