Summer is the best time to get your chimney swept. Beat the fall rush before everyone remembers they need it done in September.

This is what we found in a chimney recently. That black buildup is creosote and it is extremely flammable. The homeowner had no idea it looked like this.

We recommend getting your chimney inspected once a year. It does not take long and it is a lot cheaper than the alternative. Give us a call/text while our schedule still has openings.

That brick sitting between the flue tiles might not look like much but it is creating gaps that allow creosote to migrate behind the flue tiles.
Creosote in those spaces cannot be swept out and is one of the leading causes of house fires. This is only found when someone looks inside the flue.

That black crusty buildup coating the inside is creosote. It accumulates every time a wood stove or fireplace is used and without regular sweeping it builds up fast. What starts as a light coating becomes what you see here.
If your stove or fireplace has been running all winter and hasn't been swept yet now is a good time to get it on the schedule.

These photos tell the story better than words can but we'll try.
What you're looking at is a liner and cap completely overtaken by creosote. Thick. Wet. Dripping. The kind of buildup that doesn't happen overnight and the kind that doesn't give you a warning before it becomes a serious problem.
Creosote at this stage is highly flammable and when it gets this heavy it starts restricting the flue and dripping back down into the system.
This is exactly why annual inspections and regular sweeping matter. Caught early creosote is manageable. Left alone it becomes a situation like this one.
If you can't remember the last time your chimney was swept don't wait until it looks like this!

When a chase cover looks like that first photo it's already past due.
Rust had taken over and the Class A pipe needed to be raised to the correct height as well.

Out with the old. New stainless steel chase cover fitted correctly with a proper Class A pipe and cap installed at the right height. Done right and built to last.

Before and after. Same chimney. Same day.
That first photo is mid repair with the old deteriorated crown removed and the top of the chimney being cleaned up and prepped for what comes next.
The second photo is the finished product. A fresh poured crown properly sloped to shed water away from the flue and built to hold up for years to come.

Not a bad view on a cool evening.
This Regency HI2450 insert in Brown Enamel was installed into an existing stone fireplace and the fit couldn't be more at home. The ornate cast iron detailing and rich enamel finish make it as much a piece of the room as it is a heat source.
If you have a fireplace that doesn't get used we can change that. Regency makes some of the finest inserts available and we'd love to show you what's possible.

This is why chimney inspections matter.
What you're looking at is a cracked flue tile with a significant gap covered in creosote buildup. That gap means heat, smoke and combustion gases are no longer contained inside the flue where they belong. Combined with creosote buildup that's a serious fire risk that most homeowners would never know was there without an inspection.
This is not something that shows up on the outside of your chimney. It's only found when someone actually looks inside.
