Hotel check before holiday travel

The scariest souvenir you can bring home from a trip? Bed bugs.
Heading somewhere for Thanksgiving? Take two minutes when you get to the hotel room before you unpack.

1. Put your suitcase in the bathroom or on the luggage rack, not the bed or floor.
2. Pull back the sheets at the head of the bed and check the mattress seams and corners.
3. Look behind the headboard if you can.
4. You're looking for small reddish-brown bugs, tiny dark spots, or shed skins.

Find something? Ask for a different room, and not one right next door.

When you get home, unpack in the garage or laundry room and run your clothes through a hot dryer.

Something in the walls at night?

Hearing scratching in the walls after dark? Before you call a ghost hunter, call a pest pro.

Noises at night are usually mice. Louder noises during the day, especially early morning, point more toward squirrels.

Other signs it's mice:
• Droppings in drawers, cabinets, or along the walls
• Chewed food packaging
• A musty smell in one spot

In most houses I go into with these signs, I can find where they're getting in from the outside. 262-214-5387

🐭Mice can use surprisingly small openings around a structure.

That makes October a good time to look beyond obvious entrances and check areas like utility penetrations, foundation gaps, vents, garage edges, and spaces around exterior pipes.

The goal isn't to wait until you see a rodent. It's to understand how they could get access in the first place.

Not sure where the vulnerable spots are? Schedule an inspection with PestMaster.

Deer ticks don't quit in fall

People think tick season ends in summer. It doesn't.

Adult deer ticks are active in fall, any day it's above freezing. Raking leaves, bow hunting, walking the dog along the tree line, that's when they find you.

Do a tick check when you come in: behind the knees, waistband, armpits, hairline, behind the ears. Check the pets, too.

☀️October weather can be unpredictable, and pest activity can be just as varied.

Warm stretches may keep ants, mosquitoes, ticks, and other warm-weather pests active. When temperatures cool, rodents, cockroaches, and other pests may start changing where they spend their time and what they're looking for.

PestMaster understands the transition and the different activity that can come with it.

Contact your local PestMaster team for service based on what's happening in your area this fall.

Mice are moving in

Spooky season has nothing on what I find in garages this time of year. Cold nights in Racine and Kenosha mean mice are looking for a way inside.
A mouse can get through a gap about the width of a pencil. Garage door seals, the gap where the AC line goes through the wall, and the spot where the siding meets the foundation are the usual spots I find.
Take a walk around your house this weekend with a flashlight. If you see droppings in the garage or hear scratching in the walls at night, don't wait until December.

You reach for a sweater. Pest behavior responds in its own way.

Cooler temperatures can change where pests search for food, moisture, warmth, and shelter. Meanwhile, warmer afternoons may still support insects that were active throughout summer.

That overlap is part of what makes fall pest activity interesting. It's not an ending. It's a transition.

Watch for changing activity around your property, and call PestMaster if something doesn't look right.
