I inspected this unusual wood stove insert yesterday. I say unusual because I had never seen one like it before, and when I shared the photo with a former CSIA president and the instructor who taught my Copperfield Level 2 chimney inspection class, neither recognized it either.

Normally, a lot of information can be gathered from the data tag, but this one was so dirty that the model number could not be identified. Even with limited information, I was still able to inspect the system and provide the homeowner with valuable findings.

Have you ever come across one like this? (This is not a heatilator)

Chimney inspection went pretty well at this home. Using my drone, I was able to identify that the chase cover does not properly overlap the siding. Since this is a townhome, I would imagine this repair would fall under the HOA’s responsibility.

The return air is located too close to the fireplace opening. IRC requires there be a minimum 10’ clearance between the return air and the fireplace opening. This design can cause poor drafting.

This oversized aftermarket grate was installed inside a factory-built fireplace. The problem is these fireplaces are tested and listed as a complete system. Throwing in a larger grate like this can allow much larger fires than the fireplace was designed to handle.

That excessive heat can overheat and damage the refractory panels, metal firebox, chimney components, and surrounding materials over time.

Bigger fire does not always mean better fireplace.

Inspected this fireplace today with a gas log set installed. Soot buildup was noted on the logs, which is typically an indication the fireplace is burning dirty or improperly. This can happen for multiple reasons such as dirty burners, improper log placement, restricted airflow, venting issues, or other combustion-related problems. Conditions like this can lead to incomplete combustion and potentially allow carbon monoxide to enter the home. It’s a good idea to have fireplaces showing excessive soot serviced by a qualified gas fireplace technician.

It’s incredible how often I see this done wrong — an exhaust-style vent installed on an intake/combustion air vent for a fireplace. This happens all the time when new siding is installed. If you’re having new siding installed because of storm damage, make sure they’re using the correct style vent. It may also not be a bad idea for anyone else to go outside and check whether they have the correct vent type installed.
