Don’t Let Your Window Treatments End Up in Knots If You’re About To Paint or Renovate

What happens to the custom window treatments, after a home closing?

If a buyer would like to make use of the existing window treatments they should contact
NY Drapery Care for removal and cleaning before the painters or construction contractors start their work so we can properly handle and tag each piece we remove from the apartment. Only once the painting/renovation is done would we come and rehang the window treatments and properly dress the windows.

If a seller wants to keep their existing window treatments they absolutely should contact NY Drapery Care to have them cleaned and properly boxed for long term storage using acid-free tissue. Fabrics should never be folded and stored while still covered in years of soot and dust.

If no one wants the old window treatments it still might be the time to contact NY Drapery Care. We run a year-round drapery donation drive by facilitating the removal, freshening up, and delivery of unneeded drapery to Housing Works’ thrift stores. Funds raised from your donation will be used toward assisting those suffering from both HIV/AIDS and homelessness. How often should I clean my solar shades?

Do you have solar shades installed in your windows? If you do, you probably realize that they offer many benefits including providing privacy, protecting furnishings, artwork, and floors from UV exposure and the fading associated with it, as well as reducing heating and cooling costs by limiting heat gain and loss through the windows.

To help avoid permanent discoloration it is best to remove the soot every 1-3 years. Some solar shade fabrics are more serviceable than others and will clean very well even if left unmaintained for 10 years while other fabrics will become permanently discolored in a much shorter time.

When is steam cleaning not really steam cleaning?

Companies that often advertise as “steam cleaners” are actually rug and carpet cleaning specialists NOT fabric window treatment cleaning specialists.

The use of dry v***r steam, under the right circumstances, and when properly applied, can be a very effective step in safely cleaning delicate fabric window treatments. Low moisture steam, that some professional steam boilers produce, can reach temperatures of 250°F- 300°F or more.

Killing the dust mites is only half the battle. What must be done as a next step is to use a specially outfitted Hepa filtered vacuum to remove the allergens. This critical step will remove both the old dust mite droppings and dust mite remains that actually cause people’s allergic reactions.

This non-chemical cleaning process penetrates deeply and safely into the fabric to kill and remove any dust mites that took up residence in drapery, sheers or other fabric window treatments such as Roman shades.
