🌧️ What to Expect After All This Rain in South Texas 🌧️

The rain may be over, but the pests are just getting started.
Over the next few days, don’t be surprised if you start seeing an increase in:

🦟 Mosquitoes – Standing water is the perfect breeding ground. Even something as small as a bottle cap full of water can produce mosquitoes. Local officials have already warned that recent rains are creating ideal conditions for mosquito activity.
🐜 Ants – Heavy rain floods underground colonies, forcing ants to higher ground… and sometimes right into your home.
🪳 Cockroaches – Saturated soil pushes them out of storm drains, sewers, and mulch beds as they search for dry shelter.
🕷️ Spiders – Where insects go, spiders follow. An increase in bug activity usually means you’ll notice more webs around your home.

💧 A few things you can do today:
✔️ Empty standing water from flower pots, buckets, bird baths, toys, and clogged gutters.
✔️ Trim back vegetation touching your home.
✔️ Check weather stripping and door sweeps for gaps.
✔️ Keep outdoor lights off when possible to reduce insects gathering near entryways.

Those of us who’ve lived in Texas for a while know exactly what these little fuzzy critters are. But if you’re new here, this is one of those things you’ll want to remember…

🚫 Don’t touch the asp caterpillar!

It may look soft and harmless, but those fluffy hairs hide venomous spines that can deliver a very painful sting.

You’ll often find them:
🌳 On trees and shrubs
🪵 On fences and decks
🪑 On outdoor furniture
🚗 Even on your vehicle
🧱 Along walls or buildings
🍂 Crawling across the ground

They come in several colors, including cream, yellow, gray, orange/rust, and brown—but every color can sting.

So, if you see a fuzzy caterpillar and you’re not sure what it is, admire it from a distance and keep your hands off.

🐛 See White Cocoons on a Tomato Hornworm? That’s Great News for Your Garden!

If you spot a tomato hornworm covered in tiny white “grains of rice,” don’t remove it!
Those white structures aren’t eggs—they’re the cocoons of beneficial braconid wasps. Before spinning those cocoons, the wasp larvae developed inside the hornworm. At this point, the hornworm is dying and will no longer be around much longer to damage your plants.
Once the adult wasps emerge, they’ll go on to help control future hornworm populations naturally, making them one of your garden’s best allies.

🐜 Anyone else seeing more earwigs lately?
With all the warm temperatures and humidity we’ve been having in South Texas, it’s completely normal to start seeing more of these little critters around your home.
The good news? They may look a little creepy, but earwigs aren’t dangerous. They’re usually just looking for cool, damp places to hide and can sneak inside through tiny cracks under doors or around windows.

A few simple ways to keep them outside:
✔️ Don’t overwater flower beds near your home.
✔️ Keep mulch and leaves away from your foundation.
✔️ Seal gaps around doors and windows.
✔️ Fix any leaky faucets or standing water around the house.

If you’re finding them inside more often than you’d like, it could be a sign that they’re finding the perfect conditions around your home.

🐞 Not Every “Ladybug” Is Actually a Ladybug!

Have you spotted little red or orange beetles around your home? They may look alike, but there’s a good chance you’re seeing an Asian lady beetle instead of a true ladybug.

Here’s how to tell them apart:

❤️ Ladybugs (the good guys!)
✔️ Usually bright red with distinct black spots.
✔️ Black head with small white markings.
✔️ Shy and rarely bother people.
✔️ Excellent natural pest control—they love eating aphids and other garden pests!

🟠 Asian Lady Beetles
⚠️ Can be orange, red, or even tan, with many, few, or no spots.
⚠️ Often have a distinctive black “M” or “W” marking on the white area just behind their head.
⚠️ Frequently gather on homes and buildings in large numbers.
⚠️ May bite if handled and can release a yellow, foul-smelling liquid when disturbed.

The good news? Both are beneficial because they help control plant pests. However, Asian lady beetles are much more likely to become a nuisance when they move indoors.
