Here in chaffee county colorado there are very many masonry chimneys just like this one that have not had a cap installed for the life time of the chimney. Many think because it's concrete that it's impervious to damage. In reality sun and water make these systems fail just like this one has. A good example of how water mixes with creosote and washed the mortar joint from between the tile, requiring the installation of a stainless steel liner.
