A roof is four layers and you only ever see one.

Decking is the sheathing nailed to the trusses. Underlayment is the water barrier rolled over it. Ice and water shield is the self-adhering membrane at the eaves and valleys. Shingles are the wear surface on top.

When you're comparing quotes, ask which of those four each one includes. That's usually where the price difference is hiding.

Icicles along the eaves get blamed on the weather. Most of the time the cause is heat leaking out of your attic.

Warm air escaping upward melts snow on the upper roof. That water runs down to the cold overhang, where nothing underneath is warming it, and freezes. A week of that builds a ridge of ice thick enough to push water back up under your shingles.

Replacing shingles won't fix it. Sealing and venting the attic will.

Ice and water shield is the sticky membrane that goes down before the shingles.

It belongs along the eaves, in the valleys, and around anything that punches through the roof: chimneys, vents, skylights. Those are the places where water backs up or gets driven sideways in a storm.

Minnesota code sets a minimum for how far up from the eave it has to run. Ask a bidder how far they're taking it, because the minimum and the right answer aren't always the same number.

Shingles don't seal by magic. There's a strip of adhesive under each one that needs sun and warm days to bond properly. A roof that goes on in October usually seals within the week. One that goes on in January might not bond until spring, and that's a long stretch of wind season with shingles that aren't locked down.
