Before the downtown stadiums, there was a ballpark at the corner of Grand and Dodier where St. Louis lived and died with its teams. ⚾ Sportsman's Park was the home of the Cardinals and, for many years, the Browns too, a green cathedral of a place where two clubs shared one field and a whole city its summers.
It was baseball the old way, a hand operated scoreboard, a covered double decked grandstand, the smell of ci**rs and roasted peanuts, streetcars dropping off crowds at the gates. Legends played on that grass, and pennants were won and lost there. If you were a kid taken to your first game at Sportsman's Park, the memory of walking up into that green and seeing the field never fades.
The old park came down in 1966, and a boys and girls club stands there now, but the ground is holy to anyone who remembers. 🌟 Did you ever get to a game at Sportsman's Park, and who took you?
