When is it time for a therapy dog to retire? 🐾

Our therapy dogs bring comfort and joy to so many people. As volunteers, it's our job to make sure our pets enjoy those visits, too!

As therapy dogs get older, their needs may change. They may slow down, tire more easily, or show less interest in visiting.

Knowing when it's time to retire your therapy dog can be a tough decision. At Pet Partners, we believe every therapy animal deserves to feel happy, safe, and comfortable throughout their volunteer journey.

“A Different Breed,” a nine-part documentary series streaming on Amazon Prime since 2025, is a different breed.

It’s a sports story, but the athletes are dogs.

It’s a Hollywood type of documentary, but it was made by a small company in Maplewood.

And now it is up for three Emmy Awards: Outstanding Lifestyle Program, Outstanding Directing for a Daytime Non-Studio Non-Fiction Series and Outstanding Editing for a Daytime Non-Studio Program.

The Carthage Humane Society is currently on lock down while we deal with an outbreak of parvovirus. For those of you unfamiliar with it, it is a severely infectious viral disease that affects a dogs gastrointestinal tract. It is a life threatening, terrifying ordeal to deal with, especially in a shelter setting. So we are taking extreme measures to ensure that our animals, and the public, are kept safe, and given plenty of opportunity to rest and heal while they undergo the necessary treatments.

We expect this lock down to take place for about a 2 week period but we will keep the public updated accordingly. With that said, CHS will not be accepting any intakes of any kind, nor will we be doing adoptions, walk through, accepting volunteers, or community service workers. If you would like to drop off donations, please place them outside of our shelter doors, in the black and yellow tub labeled donations. Please keep CHS staff and its animals in your thoughts and prayers, as we are all exhausted and stressed out, trying to ensure that each and every one of the animals in our care is able to pull through this. Luckily we seem to have caught this outbreak rather early, but you can never be too cautious with a virus such as this.

The doors to the front of the building will remained locked during this time period. Thank you all for understanding and cooperation.

It truly is raining puppies. Every day we are bombarded with requests to take abandoned, unwanted pups that have nowhere to go. This weekend, a rescuer from Oklahoma was set to bring us a couple of dogs that desperately needed help when we heard about a litter of tiny puppies that had been dumped nearby. She said there was plenty of room to bring these little guys along, so these discarded babies are now Speaklings. All five of them are boys and each one is sweet and silly and just perfect. We think they are Aussie or border collie mixes but have sent our DNA to find out more. We’ll introduce them individually soon, but they are the Avengers and are being fostered in metro Atlanta and Greenville, South Carolina. From unwanted to adored, welcome little ones!

Life can bring disappointments, unexpected changes, and moments when we feel like we have no one to turn to. Through it all, a dog's love can be a comforting reminder that we are worthy of affection even on our hardest days. They stay close when we are struggling, offer comfort without needing explanations, and make difficult moments feel a little less lonely. Having a loyal dog by our side is a gift that never stops meaning something. ❤️
