Two hypothetical scenarios where you invest $6000 at the birth of your child. 1) Looking at the best case scenario with an 11% annual return and the retirement age of 65. The problem that many see with this scenario is that 11% return is rather aggressive, and the retirement age of 65 is not too appealing either. Which bring me to the second scenario 2) Same initial deposit but a 9% annual return and the retirement age of 55. Remember, these hypothetical scenarios assume that not a penny more was contributed to the account after the initial deposit. Imagine what the account could be worth if more contributions were made.
If you are looking to open an investing account for you child, you have a few options. 1) Regular custodial account. 2) Custodial Roth IRA, if your child has earned income. 3) 529 Plan, specifically for college expenses.
