If your microwave sparked inside — stop using it. Don't run it again "just to see if it does it again."
I'm Sayed. I've done over 4,000 appliance repairs around Sacramento since 2020, and this is the one call I ask people to make the same day.

Three things cause almost all of it:
1. Something metal. Foil, a fork, a mug with a metallic trim, a takeout container with a metal rim. Usually harmless once you take it out but check the inside wall for burn marks before you use it again.

2. The waveguide cover. That small beige panel on the side wall isn't decoration. It shields the magnetron. Grease and food splatter soak into it, carbonize, and start arcing. This is the most common cause when there's no metal in there at all — and it's a cheap part. Cleaning or replacing that one panel usually ends the problem.

3. Paint chipped down to bare metal. If the inside is peeling or rusted through, that one's different. I'll tell you straight: that unit isn't worth repairing. Replace it.

Two things to actually do:
Wiping the inside weekly splatter is what kills the waveguide cover in the first place. And never run it empty. With no food or water inside, the energy bounces straight back into the magnetron and destroys it.

And please don't open it up yourself. The capacitor inside a microwave can hold a dangerous charge long after it's unplugged. This is the one appliance where I genuinely mean it; this isn't a DIY job.

If it's sparking, smoking, smells like burning plastic, or the door glass is cracked, unplug it and leave it unplugged.
