Hereβs some of my most used methods, tips + resources for decluttering.
Hereβs the breakdownβ¬οΈβ¬οΈ
1οΈβ£ Konmari Method is very popular and most folks have scrolled across her method on YouTube or Marie Kondoβs Netflix show. The foundation of her method is about committing to minimizing, going by category NOT by room, and to ask yourself βdoes this item spark joy?β. I find this method to be a very positive experience.
2οΈβ£ DoΜstaΜdning or The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning is a very morbid concept, but donβt let the title scare you. Instead I find this concept extremely empowering and I think about it every time I am decluttering. Iβm definitely more a fan of this concept over any other. Thinking about how your possessions would be a burden on your loved ones to sort through once you have moved on is extremely important to think about. As we age, itβs important to note these things and to de-clutter, donate and pass on our belongings with deep intentions.
3οΈβ£ Buy Nothing Project is a world wide movement with the basic philosophy of giving, asking, trading and borrowing items without spending a dime. These groups are great for giving items to neighbors, but also granting peoples wants. There has been many times where members have asked for items that I wasnβt using but was holding onto. So I was able to get motivated to give those items because someone simply asked. I also use the group to ask to borrow items I would only use once, like a carpet cleaner and a laminator. Join your local buy nothing group on Facebook.
4οΈβ£ One tip I implemented in my home is to have a donate box where I commit to decluttering 5 items a month. Can be big or small, but just has to be 5!
