The owner of this property just needed their shed roof, and a small area of the roof on the main house treated for moss, mold and mildew. We started the cleaning with a light brushing to remove some of the heavier concentrated areas of moss, as well as any loose surface material such as pine needles and dirt. Aggressive brushing can cause damage to asphault shingles and is not recommended by most manufacturers. We then rinse the roof with low pressure to remove any remaining loose surface material that was missed with the brush. High pressure should NEVER be used when cleaning a roof. We then go in and spray down the surface with a surfactant and sodium hypochlorite mix. We allow the mix to dwell on the surface for a pre determined amount time. By this point, all of the moss will have turned white and is dead. We will then do a very thorough low pressure rinse before the job has been completed.
Post roof wash: it is nearly impossible to remove all of the moss from the roof, especially when it grows at the edge of where the shingles overlap. Once treated, all organic material WILL be dead. Any remaining (now white) moss will dry up and will eventually fall off due to the wind and rain. This may take anywhere from 6-8 weeks. Some roof washes don’t provide instant gratification, but we take the proper measures to safely and effectively clean these surfaces without causing any damage to your shingles!
Side note: our photographer forgot after pictures of the main roof….rookie 😬
