College move-in season brings new roommates, secondhand furniture, and sometimes bed bugs. The National Pest Management Association, based right here in Virginia, put out a reminder this semester: in its 2025 survey with the University of Florida, 36% of pest professionals said they had treated bed bugs in college dorms.
Why it matters: dorms and student apartments see a lot of people, bags, and borrowed furniture coming and going, and bed bugs travel on all of it. With fall break and Thanksgiving coming up, plenty of bags will be heading home from VCU, UVA, UMW, and beyond.
Tips for students and parents:
- Check used furniture and mattresses carefully before bringing them in.
- Keep clutter down so there are fewer places for bugs to hide.
- When students come home, unpack away from bedrooms.
- Run clothes and bedding through the dryer on high heat.
