This is the most worthy cause I know, because before I had a business to showcase here and came to know many of you fellow pipe enthusiasts, the Desert Club became a key part of my recovery from su***de by the bottle, so to say. Now, a brief 36 years later, I have the privilege of serving on the Club's board of directors.

I was walking up Second Street NW in Albuquerque yesterday, and it was hot, so when I came upon an antique store, I thought: Maybe they have a good old pipe in there -- and if not, I'll at least cool off. Aftger looking around, I went to the sales counter and asked the owner if he had any old smoking pipes. He brightened and said he had one, and he pointed it out in the glass case between us. It was a Silversmith Race Horse Billiard, c. 1920s. The photos tell the rest of the story better than I can, except that I would have paid the $50 on the sticker if the kind old gent hadn't given me a ten-dollar discount!
