When did playing hockey for your hometown stop being enough?

Youth hockey throughout New England is changing. With more families chasing AAA programs, elite labels, and the next level, I can’t help but wonder what we’re leaving behind.

Our newest Hockey Detox Journal entry takes a look at the EHF, E9, and the growing pressure on town hockey programs.

This isn’t about criticizing kids or their families. It’s about remembering where the game started for so many of us and asking what we can do to give back.

As a hockey parent myself, I think it’s a conversation worth having.

I’d love to hear your thoughts.

The Hockey We’re Leaving Behind | Journal 006

When everyone is chasing the next level, who protects the town rink where it all began? A New England youth hockey reflection and a call to give back.

Touchy Subject: Most Parents Are Their Kid's Biggest Problem in Youth Sports.

There, I said it.

We spend thousands of dollars on tuition, equipment, private lessons, tournaments, and travel. We sacrifice weekends, wake up at ridiculous hours, and spend half our lives sitting inside freezing hockey rinks.

Somewhere along the way, too many parents start believing that all of that gives them the right to demand perfection from their children.

It doesn't.

Kids make mistakes. Goalies let in bad goals. Players miss assignments. Teams get blown out. That's hockey.

But what happens afterward?

Some kids can't even make it to the locker room without getting an earful. Others spend the entire car ride home listening to everything they did wrong. Some are more worried about disappointing their parents than losing the actual game.

And we wonder why kids struggle to manage their emotions, lose confidence, or eventually stop enjoying the sport.

I'm not suggesting we eliminate accountability. Quite the opposite. Kids need to understand their mistakes, accept criticism, and learn how to handle defeat. But there's a significant difference between developing a competitive athlete and making a child miserable.

Coaches aren't exempt from this conversation either.

Our latest Journal entry, After the Defeat, talks about the uncomfortable side of youth hockey that many parents and coaches would rather ignore. We also touch on the unique pressures young goaltenders face and share some perspective from Coach Wapps of Increase Performance.

Some people will agree with this article. Others will probably take offense to it.

Maybe that's exactly why it's worth discussing.

What happens after a hard youth hockey loss matters. An honest look at how players, goalies, parents and coaches respond when the final horn sounds.

We just dropped another banger of a guide at Hockey Detox Company.

Introducing Guide 005: Inside the Stick.

Ever wonder what actually makes one hockey stick better than another? Why two sticks with the same flex can feel completely different? Or why the most expensive stick on the rack might not be the best stick for you?

We wanted to go beyond the marketing and get into the engineering behind the equipment.

Our newest interactive guide explores stick flex, kickpoints, carbon construction, blade curves, shaft geometry, and the differences between youth, junior, intermediate, senior, and professional pro-stock sticks.

And we didn’t forget about the goalies. We dedicated an entire section to goalie-stick construction, paddle sizing, blade design, puck handling, and how your stick works with you in the crease.

We cover Bauer, CCM, TRUE, and Warrior using manufacturer information, product photography, and interactive tools that allow you to explore the differences yourself.

The goal isn’t to tell you which stick to buy. It’s to give you the knowledge to understand what you’re buying and what makes a stick right for your size, position, mechanics, and personal preferences.

Because the best stick isn’t necessarily the most expensive one. It’s the one that works best for you.

Not all goalie pads are created equal, and the most expensive pair isn't necessarily the right pair.

We've just completed our newest Hockey Detox Guide: Inside the Pad, a comprehensive look at modern goalie pad engineering, sizing, flexibility, construction, strapping, and how different designs affect movement on the ice.

We've even built an interactive 3D-style geometry experience that lets you explore different areas of the pad and understand how they function during different saves.

Whether you're a parent buying your child's first set of pads or an experienced goalie looking to understand the equipment better, this guide was built for you.

Better information leads to smarter purchases. That's how we help keep hockey affordable.

We’re excited to announce the release of our second Hockey Detox Guide: The Science Beneath the Steel.

Hockey skate profiling is one of the most misunderstood aspects of hockey equipment. Players hear terms like Quad Zero, dual radius, Ellipse, pitch, and radius of hollow, but how many actually understand what those adjustments do?

We wanted to change that.

Our newest guide takes an in-depth look at the science behind skate profiling, why it matters, who benefits from it, and how different blade configurations affect the way we move on the ice.

This isn’t just another article filled with technical terminology. We’ve created an interactive educational experience with detailed diagrams, adjustable blade profiles, sharpening comparisons, and visual demonstrations that let you explore how everything works.

Whether you’re a parent buying your child’s first pair of skates, a competitive forward, a defenseman, a recreational player, or a goaltender, there’s something here for you.

At Hockey Detox, we believe understanding your equipment is just as important as owning it. Not every player needs custom profiling, and the most expensive or complicated option isn’t necessarily the right one.

Our goal isn’t to convince you to spend more money. It’s to help you make better decisions with the money you’re already spending.

Today marks an important milestone for Hockey Detox.

We are proud to introduce our very first educational guide: The Goalie Glove Guide.

We believe that before anyone spends hundreds or thousands of dollars on hockey equipment, they deserve to understand exactly what they’re buying.

Our mission goes beyond selling products and providing services. We want to give players, goalies, and parents the knowledge to make informed decisions, understand their equipment, and invest in what actually works for them.

This is just the beginning of an extensive collection of educational guides we’re building for the hockey community.

Because better equipment decisions start with better information. And that information should always be free.

Something exciting is coming to Hockey Detox later today!

Over the last few weeks, I’ve been working on something that I believe will change the way players, parents, and goalies understand their equipment.

We’re taking Hockey Detox beyond products and services and building a place where education, knowledge, and hockey come together.

Our first comprehensive equipment guide launches later today, and we’re starting with one of the most talked-about pieces of goalie equipment: the glove.

Stay tuned. This is just the beginning.
