Rat season in Maine. 🐀 Norway rats burrow under sheds, foundations and compost bins — and a gap the size of a quarter is all they need to get in. Seeing burrows or droppings around your place in Greater Portland? Free inspection: (207) 770-0274 · robbinspest.com

PEST FACTS: NORWAY RATS 🐀

Mice get most of the attention in October, but Norway rats are moving too — and they're a different problem.

FACT: Rats squeeze through a gap the size of a quarter.
FACT: Norway rats burrow under foundations, sheds and compost bins. Look for smooth-edged holes 2–3 inches wide near the base of a structure.
FACT: Their front teeth never stop growing, so they gnaw constantly — wood, plastic bins, even wiring.

Around Greater Portland we see them most near compost piles, chicken coops, bird feeders and the gaps where old stone foundations meet the sill. If you've spotted burrows or droppings bigger than a grain of rice, it's time for a look.

Cape Elizabeth, we're on the road for pre-winter inspections. 🚚

Coastal homes take a beating from wind and salt, and every loose shingle, gap under the sill or burrow by the shed is an open door for mice, rats and overwintering insects once the first hard frost hits. Our technicians walk the full perimeter, show you the entry points and seal them before the cold settles in.

We put together a fall guide just for Cape Elizabeth homeowners — what coastal properties face this season and a 7-step walk-around you can do this weekend:

Hear scratching in the walls at night? 🏡

Late October in Maine: the first frosts are on the lawn, the heat is on, and mice have already picked their winter home. If that home is yours, you'll usually hear it first, in the walls or ceiling after dark.

Fall is when mice settle in, and the sooner we inspect, the less there is to undo. We find how they're getting in, seal it, and deal with the ones already inside.

Rodent Awareness Week is a good excuse to book it before winter:

Pest Facts: House Mice 🐭 (Rodent Awareness Week edition)

The most common fall visitor in Maine homes, and the one most people underestimate.

FACT: A mouse fits through a dime-sized gap.
FACT: A female can have 5 to 10 litters a year.
FACT: They gnaw wiring and insulation.

Put those together and you see why a couple of mice in October becomes a real problem by January. The gaps they use are usually around pipes, cables, sill plates and garage doors, and sealing those is the heart of what we do each fall.

It's Rodent Awareness Week, and in Greater Portland the timing is no accident. 🐭

Mid-October is when mice stop foraging outside and start looking for a warm wall void. Our technicians spend this week doing exactly what you see here: checking foundations where pipes and cables enter, because a gap the size of a dime is all a mouse needs.

Apartment and multi-unit buildings get hit hardest. Shared walls, shared utility chases, lots of doors. We just published a fall guide for Portland property managers on how mice move through multi-tenant buildings and how to stop them:

Homeowner or property manager, the first step is the same: an inspection before the cold sets in. Call (207) 770-0274 or visit robbinspest.com.

Pest Facts: Cluster Flies 🪰

Seeing slow, sleepy flies gathering at your windows this fall? Those are probably cluster flies, and Maine homes get plenty of them in October.

FACT: They gather on sunny south and west walls in fall.
FACT: They spend the winter in attics and wall voids.
FACT: They do not breed indoors or in garbage.

They're looking for a warm place to wait out the winter, which is why they turn up again at the windows on mild, sunny days. The fix is keeping them out in the first place: sealing gaps around windows, siding and rooflines before they settle in.

Proudly serving Westbrook and Greater Portland. 🍂

If you spot our white truck on your street this month, it's fall pest season at work. October is when mice look for a warm way in, cluster flies and stink bugs settle into attics and wall voids, and firewood starts coming indoors.

We just published a fall guide for Westbrook homeowners covering what to watch for and what to seal before the cold sets in:
