☀️ Summer is in full swing in Pittsburgh — so get those kids outside! Being outside does more than lift moods (although that’s a huge bonus!) — it’s actually a major player in better sleep. Here’s how:
🌞 Sunlight boosts melatonin naturally.
The sun helps the skin produce melanin, which the body needs to later create melatonin—your sleep hormone. More sunlight = better sleep without supplements.
🕰️ It sets your child’s circadian rhythm.
Our internal clocks (aka circadian rhythms) rely on sunlight to stay on track. Sunlight during the day + darkness at night = a body that knows when it’s time to sleep and wake.
🏃♀️ It encourages more movement.
Being outside naturally boosts physical activity. That movement leads to shorter sleep onset (how long it takes to fall asleep) and deeper rest. Win-win!
So as the sun lights up our ’Burgh, soak it up (with sunscreen, of course 😉). It’s one of the simplest ways to help your whole family sleep better at night!💤
