That pink stuff we all hate in the bathroom isn't usually caused by stuff in the water, like most of us think! Nope...it's caused by airborne bacteria called Serratia Marcescens which produces a pigment called prodigiosin.
It's found in soil, plants, dog water bowls, even in animal digestive tracts - but especially thrives in warm damp places where it can dine on soap scum and other biofilm. While largely benign, it has been associated with conjunctivitis, UTIs, and pneumonia, particularly in the immunocompromised.
Fear not! Routine cleanings and properly-diluted chlorine solutions kill these little buggers. :)
