This customer nearly had a dryer fire because of a bad cap install by her roofer. The damper flap was caved in and completely inoperable, blocking airflow out of the vent pipe and trapping the lint, heat, air, and moisture inside of the dryers.

This customer had been having trouble with their dryer ever since they had a new roof installed. Heat and condensation was building up in the machine and reducing the efficiency.

When I started investigating, I found out the vent was nearly 30 feet long with two separate 90 degree elbows. This type of vent design is very tough for the fans inside modern dryers to push lint through, and so debris tends to build up in the horizontal section running through the attic.

That's exactly what had happened in this vent.

However, the roofers had also installed a screen on the dryer vent, which goes against building code in many places, because it is a significant fire hazard. The screen had developed a total airflow blockage, which was trapping the heat and condensation inside the dryer below.

I was able to remove this screen from inside the attic, clean the vent, and then reassemble the vent to restore full functionality to the dryer.

This customer had the wrong style of vent cap installed on his roof, which had caused a buildup of lint to obstruct the dryer vent.

This was a heat vent style of cap with an internal collar and a flat cap. While it is suitable for venting scenarios like exhaust fans and passive heat shedding, this style can be hazardous when used for a dryer vent, because the flat top runs perpendicular to the vent, reflecting some of the air and most of the debris back down into the vent, which can rapidly cause obstruction.

I was able to enter the attic, disassemble the vent, clear the blockage in the cap, and brush out the full length of the vent, restoring airflow and safety for the homeowner.

I then referred him to the a roof repair specialist in North Austin who I personally know and trust to install the proper roof cap: Red Oak Roofworks.

This customer had a long dryer vent with two bends that ran through the attic and out to the roof. It had been several years since she'd had the vent serviced, and it had lead to a dryer failure.

She called me out to service the vent before she had a new dryer installed.

I did most of the work from inside the attic, cutting the tape and the joints and disassembling the vent run piece by piece to clear the lint. I also reached into the cap from inside the attic to remove the debris that had built up there.

After the work was finished, I reassembled the vent and did a final airflow test to confirm it was functioning properly.

This client said they clean their dryer vent every year, so this video is a great example of how much lint can build up between annual cleanings.

In this job, I pulled out the dryer, cleaned out the dryer exhaust pipe and sleeve, then connected my blower to the vent.

I then went to the roof and ran my 20-foot rotary brush from the roof cap all the way to the bottom of the vent until the air was blowing out clean.

After all that was done, I cleaned up the lint from the roof and gutter, and then reassembled everything and put the dryer back into place.

This dryer vent had an illegal screen attached to the outside of it along with a major buildup of debris at an elbow joint.

The screen was installed during a roof replacement, and it had been trapping lint inside the vent for about 2 years.

During this dryer vent cleaning in North Austin, I went into the attic, disassembled the dryer vent, cleaned it thoroughly with my brush and blower, removed the screen by pulling it firmly from inside the attic (little trick of the trade!), then reassembled everything and cleaned up after myself.
