Whenever we post information about dripping faucets, we always get asked just how much residents should drip. A few drops? A small stream? At full flow?
The answer is that for MOST situations, dripping or streaming water about the diameter of a pencil lead or a strand of dry spaghetti should do the trick. For those who are metric system inclined, that's about 2-3 mm.
And the focus should be dripping faucets along exterior walls only, while also opening the cabinet doors underneath the sink to circulate warm air. In some instances, wrapping pipes with frost cover or insulating foam can also help.
Of course, we recognize that every situation is different and that some homes, like mobile homes or older homes with exposed pipes in crawl spaces or basements have unique needs. In those situations, dripping faucets in interior rooms may be advisable.
In those instances, we trust our residents to know the tolerances of their own homes and to understand that these circumstances may differ each time.
