🚧 City Sewer Main Repair in Progress! 🚧

So, what does a city sewer main repair actually involve?

Your home’s sewer line carries wastewater from your house to the city’s main sewer system. Over time, these pipes can fail due to tree roots, shifting soil, age, corrosion, or accidental damage. When that happens, you may notice slow drains, recurring backups, unpleasant odors, or even wet spots in your yard.

A typical repair includes:
🔹 Locating the damaged section of pipe.
🔹 Carefully excavating to expose the sewer line while protecting nearby utilities.
🔹 Removing the damaged portion of pipe.
🔹 Installing new pipe and ensuring it has the proper slope so wastewater flows correctly.
🔹 Testing the repair for leaks and proper operation.
🔹 Backfilling and compacting the soil to help prevent future settling.

While it’s not the most glamorous project, a properly repaired sewer main protects your home, your property, and keeps your plumbing system working the way it should.

Everyone says they want to run equipment… until the A/C is so cold you’re looking for a hoodie in the middle of July. 😂

Not complaining though…I’ll take freezing in the cab over melting outside any day.

Not all septic tanks are created equal… and that’s okay.

One of the questions we get asked a lot is, “What kind of septic tank should I install?”

The truth is, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer. Septic tanks are commonly made from concrete (cement), plastic/polyethylene, or fiberglass, and each has its own advantages depending on the property and installation.

🧱 Concrete Tanks (Pictured here is one of our Installs, tank provided from Brown Wilbert Inc.)
This is what we install most often, and for good reason.
✔️ Extremely durable with a long lifespan
✔️ Heavy enough to stay in place, even in areas with high groundwater
✔️ Excellent choice for most Minnesota soil conditions
✔️ Resistant to damage from normal use and traffic when installed properly

🛢️ Plastic (Polyethylene) Tanks
These tanks are much lighter, making them easier to transport and install.
✔️ Great for locations where heavy equipment access is limited
✔️ Won’t rust or corrode
⚠️ Because they’re lightweight, they may require special anchoring in areas with high groundwater to prevent them from shifting.

🔹 Fiberglass Tanks
Fiberglass offers many of the same benefits as plastic while being a bit more rigid.
✔️ Corrosion resistant
✔️ Lightweight for difficult access sites
✔️ Can be a great solution in specific applications

At Liggy’s Excavating & Septic, we recommend concrete tanks for the majority of our installations because they’ve proven themselves time and time again in Minnesota. That said, we also know there are situations where a plastic or fiberglass tank is the better choice.

The “best” septic tank isn’t about choosing one material over another…it’s about choosing the right tank for your property, your soil conditions, and your budget.

That’s why every septic system starts with evaluating the site first, not picking a tank off a shelf.

Need to replace a failing septic system?

Mille Lacs County has grant funding available to help eligible low-income homeowners replace non-compliant septic systems. Assistance may cover approximately 50 to 75% of eligible replacement costs.

Funding is very limited, with only two to three projects expected to be funded this year. If you think you may qualify, apply as soon as possible. Even if funding runs out, your application helps demonstrate the need for future funding.

For more information or to apply, contact Mille Lacs County Land Services at 320-983-8308.

Wednesday Septic Tip! 💧

Did you know that a septic system doesn’t last forever?

Most septic systems have a lifespan of 20–40 years, depending on the type of system, soil conditions, maintenance, and water usage. As systems age, they can begin to fail, leading to slow drains, sewage backups, unpleasant odors, or standing water in the yard.

This week has been all about helping homeowners stay ahead of those problems.

✔️ We just completed a septic replacement in Isle on Mille Lacs Lake.

📍We’ll finish out the week in Cedar, replacing another aging septic system before it becomes a bigger (and more expensive) problem.

Replacing a septic system isn’t just about meeting code…it’s about protecting your home, your investment, and Minnesota’s lakes, rivers, and groundwater.

If your system is getting up there in age or you’re starting to notice warning signs, now is a great time to have it evaluated. Catching problems early can save you time, money, and a whole lot of headaches.

Have questions about your septic system? Drop them in the comments or PM us, we’re always happy to help!
