Not a decoration. Happy Halloween.

This one was hanging off a fence at a job in Northlake. Big, dramatic, and completely harmless. Garden spiders like this one eat the mosquitoes and flies you don't want around anyway.

The ones worth knowing are black widows and recluses, and they don't hang out in the open like this. They stay in woodpiles, meter boxes and garage corners.

Tomorrow night, take a flashlight to your porch before the kids come by.

Nice porch. Also a buffet.

Hay bales hold moisture and give crickets and spiders somewhere to live. Pumpkins start softening within a week or two and feed roaches and ants. Dried corn brings in rodents. Put all of it against the wall six feet from your front door and you've built a feeding station.

You don't have to skip the decorations. Keep them off the ground if you can, pull the pumpkins before they collapse, and leave a gap between everything and the wall.

That mud line on the wall is a highway.

Subterranean termites can't be out in open air — they dry out. So they build tunnels out of soil and saliva to move between the ground and the wood they're eating, protected the whole way.

If you find one, don't break it open. Knocking it down doesn't stop anything, and it costs us the trail we need to find where they're coming from.

Swarms end when the heat does. The colony doesn't. This is what it looks like the rest of the year.

One visit tells you what your house needs.

Before anything gets treated, the technician goes through the places things actually live. Under the sink, behind the dishwasher, the back of the pantry, the corners of the garage, the outside of the foundation.

What our technician finds determines the right treatment plan. A home with a spider problem needs a different service than one with a rodent problem, so the price should reflect the service you actually need.

Some homes need every other month. Some need quarterly. A few need only one visit and a couple of gaps sealed.

You'll be in the attic this week. Look around while you're up there.

Getting the Halloween boxes down is the one time a year most people go up. Take a flashlight and check four things: droppings along the beams, insulation pushed into a pile like a nest, chew marks on wiring, and daylight showing where the roof meets the wall.

All four mean the same thing — rats or mice are already living up there. They're quiet at first. You don't hear them until the population grows.

Found any of it? Traps catch the ones already inside. Closing the way in is what ends it.

Red hourglass. That's the one to know.

Black widows don't build out in the open. They pick spots nobody disturbs — the underside of a fence rail, inside a woodpile, behind the meter box, the corner of the garage where the boxes have been sitting since you moved in.

Their webs look messy and tangled, not like the neat round ones between the shrubs. That mess is the tell.

If you find one, don't knock it down by hand. Clearing webs and treating the places they hide is part of every regular visit.
