Fall is the best time of year to take care of a building’s floors, and most people don’t think about it until spring.

Right now, floors are dry and there’s time to do the work properly. Once winter arrives, every entrance becomes a path for salt, sand, and slush. Ice-melt residue dulls floor finish, gets ground in by foot traffic, and over a full season can wear right through. Carpet takes the same beating, holding onto salt and moisture that are hard to get out once they set in.

So this time of year, our cleaning teams are busy getting buildings ready. They’re refinishing lobby floors so a fresh protective layer is down before the first storm, deep cleaning carpet at entrances and busy hallways, and setting up winter matting at the doors that see the most traffic.

It’s quiet work that most people never notice, and that’s how it should be. A floor that looks good in March is one somebody took care of in October.

What does "kick the tires" mean to a cleaning and facilities team?

For Kevin McGarr, it was a piece of advice handed to him by a client early on: never assume the job is done right until you've gone out and inspected it with your own eyes.

Decades later, that philosophy hasn't changed. Our supervisors still walk every floor, check the corners, and catch the small details before they ever become issues. No shortcuts, no guesswork—just showing up every single day.

The sun sets a little earlier over Boston every evening now. By November, many of the people in the buildings we serve will be heading home in the dark.

Our security and concierge teams are there through all of it: familiar faces at the desk, steady rounds after dark, and the kind of presence that makes a building feel looked after.

They know which doors should be locked by six, which tenants tend to work late, and who might appreciate an es**rt to the garage. Small things, done consistently, are what people come to count on this time of year.

🍂 Fall officially begins today! For our cleaning teams, that means the wet-season checklist is already underway.

A few things property managers should have on their radar:
- Check entrance mats before rain, snow and salt season
- Schedule floor and carpet care before winter weather hits
- Give high-traffic and high-touch areas extra attention as cold and flu season starts
- Clear dust buildup around vents and HVAC returns
- Review cleaning schedules now to catch problem areas early

Leaves, rain and grit all find their way indoors in a New England October. A well-protected entryway in the fall means safer floors all winter.

This week we celebrated Rosa Ochoa, who has cared for the Revere Neighborhood PACE center for fifteen years.

If you have ever visited the center, you have seen Rosa's work. Clean, welcoming spaces that are ready every morning for the people who count on them. Rosa takes real pride in her work, and it shows.

Rosa, thank you for fifteen wonderful years. We are lucky to have you, and we are grateful to our friends at NeighborHealth for celebrating with us.
