Happy Sunday!!! We had a great time welcoming new and returning volunteers at WNYC Transmitter Park for a beautiful day of Sunday gardening! A huge thank you to crew for helping us w**d, define paths, and discover thriving plants and shrubs in the garden beds. 🌳🪻🌸

Welcome back from Eleanor Roosevelt High School! 🏎️ It was so wonderful having your energy back in the park 🌱🌻🌳

Happy Summer ☀️ and thank you to everyone who participated in our two-part presentation Birds, Butterflies & Habitats with naturalist, author, and photographer Rick Cech. Funding for this programming was part of our NYC Green Fund Grassroots Grant Program through .

Part I was a zoom classroom experience that prepared us with some basic facts about honing our observational skills when seeking out bird and butterflies and how to identify a habitat. We learned there are many layers to urban habitats, especially in the constantly changing terrain of a NYC public park. We looked deep into our garden foliage to identify plants that encourage and support diverse populations of bird, butterfly and insect species.

Part II was on-site today and our focus was on butterflies 🦋. While we have previously and commonly seen Monarchs, Swallowtails, Red Admirals and Common Sootywing butterflies in the park, today our lone species observed was the CabbageWhite/Small White (Pieris rapae) enjoying the sunshine, gardens 🌼 and the inlet.

Missed this week’s programming? We’re back in the park for more Sunday Gardening 🧤next week on 6/29/25.

Part I: Thursday, June 19, 6-7PM, via Zoom | This program will be a primer and introduce us to methods for looking for and defining varying habitats, including disturbed urban dwellings, that serve as shelters for birds and butterflies. If you cannot make the Part I virtual presentation, you may still register to attend the Part II on-site park talk. A Zoom link will be sent to registered participants in advance of the presentation.
