Sloss Furnaces operated continuously in Birmingham, Alabama from 1882 to 1971, producing pig iron for nearly ninety years in a complex of blast furnaces, stoves, and processing facilities that at its peak employed hundreds of workers around the clock in one of the most physically demanding and dangerous industrial environments of the era. The furnaces shaped the development of Birmingham itself, which grew around the iron and steel industry in the Birmingham District during a period when Alabama was one of the most significant iron-producing regions in the country.

When the furnaces closed in 1971, there was serious consideration of demolishing the complex. The decision made instead was to preserve it, and in 1983 Sloss Furnaces was designated a National Historic Landmark. It is now a museum and event venue operated by the City of Birmingham, open to the public and hosting concerts, festivals, and exhibitions in the shadow of the original blast furnace stacks.

The scale of the industrial complex is the first thing that gets most people. The furnaces themselves are enormous structures of steel and iron and brick that were built to run continuously for decades, and they look it. Standing at the base of the stoves on a tour and looking up at the full height of the machinery is an encounter with the physical reality of industrial production that photographs do not fully prepare you for.

Birmingham is a city with a complicated history and a remarkable industrial heritage. Sloss Furnaces holds both of those things in the same place.
